MTL info/recommendations

the toy trans are notorious for being picky even the latest varieties. i like and use amsoil products but i dont think you'll be happy with your results.. you can try the synchromesh mix or use a appropriate oe fluid or sf mtl-p or r. i've used the mtl-p and it worked fine. Pennzoil synchromesh can be found in az next to the other gear lubes in the same type of round bottle. to save you $ i'd be inclined to try the Synchromesh mix with what you have.

drew, for your clunk check your mounts closely especially the rear. you may have a torn/rotted out mount. i've seen that also happpen. you can remove and fill the mount or replace it.

Thanks muddawgs. I checked AA today, and saw nothing among the gear oils that said "synchromesh," so I'm still not really clear on what is meant by that term. The people working there had no idea either. I'll check AZ and Pep Boys tomorrow.

I don't doubt any of what you all are saying, and have no aversion to ordering from SF if what I have doesn't work. It just seems strange that the manual would be so non-specific. And my mechanic, an old friend who has never steered me wrong before, said I could put almost anything in there and it would probably be fine. Wierd.

Update:

The Amsoil went in tonight, straight FGR, no mixing. I haven't had occasion to drive it very much yet, but so far it is quite smooth, up and down. Feels only marginally better than it did before. I'll let you know if any problems arise.

Funny thing: I decided to change this fluid simply because of mileage. It had been close slightly more than 50k miles since it was last changed. But the old fluid dropped out looking new: clear, smooth, golden brown, and no odd visible shavings or smells.
