My friend has a dys4500 craftsman mower with a briggs & stratton 26hp intek. It takes a 57035 wix filter. What oil choices should I think of?

I always say RTS 5W-40 for it's price to performance ratio. This season, I ran M1 15W-50 EP in all my stuff and I have to say I was very impressed. If you want the very best protection and money is a factor Rotella 15W-40 or Castrol HD-40 are both excellent.

If you're just changing oil on a push lawnmower, keep in mind it takes less than one quart so a single bottle will get you through an entire season - with top offs - so you can splurge a little on the oil quality.

Honestly though, if you run any high quality diesel oil that's optimum protection for your small engines.

Heck, if you run ANYTHING that's changed as often as once a year you're beating 95% of small engine owners.

I have been using Pennzoil HD-30. Bought a case earlier this year when it was on sale at Ace.

SL rated, lots of zinc for the flat tappets. Was using Delvac 1300 with good results.

My Scag has the B&S 26hp ELS engine and I'm using Mobil 1 TDT 5W-40. I'm in the Deep South, so I opted for the extra protection in the stifling heat.

I use the "what's in the garage coctail" in my old push mower. Doesn't seem to bother the mower. It's been getting that treatment and working hard for over 30 years. Those small mower engines aren't that fussy.

This is a $3000+ machine. I would prefer to use decent oil for my buddy's sake. He is disabled and guess who is doing the work..I also cross referenced all the 3/4x16 oil filters I could find that fit briggs and stratton. Maybe someone could benefit from it. It might save someone some cash. It seems that the longest filters have a lower micron ratings and would filter better. The last set are a common car filter . I had a few lying around from my old toyota sienna. Any thoughts?

I also have a pressure washer with a gx 390 13 hp honda. I changed the oil today and used some m-1 15-50 I had lying around. I guess if its good enough for a turbo , its good enough for the old honda. The motor is a 1998 and starts on the first pull.
Just wondering if 15w50 synthetic is close enough in weight to the 10w30 they recommend? Better?
The old oil was dirty ,But it still filmed well. I bought the motor this spring and never changed the oil. I used it quite a bit this year so I thought fall was a best time for a change.

I like any 30-weight or multi-viscostiy 30-weight HDEO for the bigger mowers, usually a synthetic or synthetic blend due to air-cooled engine oil temperatures being hotter than a typical automotive engine.

I use M1 5-30 or EP 5-30 in my 20 year old Honda. Oil stays clean all season, and the engine still runs like new.

That is very useful, thanks for sharing. I just started looking for after market filters for my club's mower - a JD L120. I discovered, just as you did, that the Wix 51348 that fits my 99 Tacoma will also fit the mower (albeit a little longer).

Wix has the best filter cross-ref look-up tool that I have seen so far. It had the JD L120 filter (GY20577) cross-ref!
