Mower height for grass/clover lawns.

I helped my neighbour grow grass on a large patch of black dirt that the grass would not grow on. I called it his UFO landing pad. He’s a seasonal resident so it rarely gets water. I ran a hose over to his patch of dirt and seeded a grass clover mixture.
It turned out nice but then he came out and ran his POS riding mower over it with three bent blades set at a nominal 2-1/2 inches. It tore up all the clover and left huge bunches of torn up grass and clover on the lawn.

I educated him and now he cuts the clover area with push mower with the height set at 3-3/4 inch. It’s high enough not to disturb the white clover but cuts the grass to give it a clean level look. Here is a close up after a cut at that height. Enjoy.

Yes, the guy said “ I don’t care” about his POS yard with his UFO landing pad. Plus it’s a seasonal home and he lets his lawn go yellow rather than irrigate it. Since I have a view of it from my deck I did the neighbourly thing and offered to fix it for him. Now I have a great view of the lush circle of white clover. Plus he gives me home made wine to even up!

Clover can be considered desirable in some places. It stays green well. It does not require as much water as grass. It does not grow as fast. I have a patch of clover. I did not plant it. It was there when I moved in. It does not bother me so I am leaving it be. It requires less mowing than most other parts of the lawn.

Clover is a desirable part of any natural lawn. It will grow and even thrive where grass won't.
I'd rather see a few weeds here and there than a lawn that obviously gets sprayed a few times each season.
