Downtown Sugar Land to downtown Houston is about 20 miles. The 2 cities likely touch somewhere. It is pretty nice here. I walk to play tennis, to church, to the store, to restaurants, to fish. Bike paths, green belts, parks.
The air quality is not bad in San Diego and on the coast is considered "Good." I can't even remember the last time I've sat in traffic in SD on the freeway. Nothing wrong with people who want to drive a nice car, I enjoy seeing exotics on a daily basis.
La Jolla is a beautiful area from what I hear. Very expensive to live. It's essentially a college town given that UCSD is there.
La Jolla is as far from a college town than you could get. Chico or San Luis Opisbo is a college town...UCSD just happens to be here but really has no effect on the town itself.

I'd check the UV Index before moving anywhere. Click the link and put in your ZIP code. Southern CA is generally moderate to high. I burn there very easily, even with a high SPF sunscreen, and I'm not ultra-pale.

Timvipond: I've been to Fort Worth a couple of times. TX sounds nice but the thing about SoCal is we would have family around. My in-laws and SIL. They will be a great help with our kids.
It will be tough leaving my brothers in Va. One lives a few miles away and one lives 5 hours away. I only see the one 5 hours away once a year or longer.

I just bought a place in San Marcos (next to Carlsbad). If you are over 55 it is great and CHEAP to live there $140,000 to purchase, $1500 in RE taxes, 1500 sq. ft. manufactured home with view of the ocean, mountains and valley. Check out Palomar Estates West. Moving from Chicago (it is zero here today).
I live in the north county of San Diego. Like all places, it has it's good points and bad points. The weather is great, but there are a lot of problems as some have mentioned. There are a lot of things to see and do year round.
As for weather, I believe it's all what you've gotten used to. My kids were born and raised here, and when we go to Washington state they complain about all the rain.
Personally when my wife and I retire (and the kids are gone) we will probably move north - to Oregon or Washington. I'm a country boy at heart, and as Glen Campbell put it: "Livin' in the city
ain't never been my idea of gettin' it on"

Lived in North County San Diego for about 20 years, but have been in the Pacific NW for almost 15 now. When we moved up here a San Diego coworker had left the company to work in Europe, came back, and the hiring managers in San Diego said to interview in Washington first as they were tired of loosing so many people with families to the area.
San Diego is a beautiful area, one of my favorite is on the back side of Mt Palomar overlooking Lake Henshaw, in the rolling hills country. From there you can head to the coast, go up to Palomar or Julian or Idylwild in the mountains, or head out to the desert. Lajolla is a nice place, Balboa Park (during the day), and I liked travelling thru Camp Pendleton instead of I5 sometimes (I suspect that is harder to do now).
But, traffic for me got pretty bad, I got tired of finding parking, waiting in lines, etc. as I was spoiled from when it wasn't a problem. I don't like month after month of 130 deg in the car, dust everywhere, and a landscape that looks like the state starts spraying Roundup in the spring. Even worse is the apparent state program that provides spray paint for taggers.
