New bike coming, a NOS 2023 Rocket 3 GT that has 120-some miles on it from salesperson “keeping it warm”. Anyway, so will put some fresh oil now for next season, until it’s 600mi first dealer maintenance at which point be changed again anyway.

Grabbed some Motul 7100 15w50. Then HPL had their sale and splurged on their motorcycle/atv oil.

Cost is about the same (during sale), which got me thinking… which one to pick long term, then? Coin toss i think; which would you pick? Not the slickest shifting transmission, so one may win out, there.

It’ll get short 5mi tripped 1-2x/week in summer and 1500-2500mi highway/yr, so not demanding.

Curious how HPL UOA's compare to main stream oil UOA's in terms of wear? How much less wear are folks experiencing? By the way they are talked about, should be notable. I'd hit it if it really makes a difference in wear.

.
I use the HPL 15w50 in my Royal Enfield 650. It works great as I imagine the Motul would too. But I’m an HPL kind of guy so that is what I will continue to use. Why the short tripping?

If cost is the same, I'd pick HPL... short tripping an engine where its not at operating temp for a serious amount of time will allow the accumulation of water and fuel in the oil, realistically. That would otherwise demand more frequent changes. It would be better to ensure that as often as it get's used, it gets to operating temp and stays there for 15-20 minutes to try and drive those contaminants out. 5mi probably won't illicit that much time--good opportunity to take the scenic route, though ;)

Yeah. All fair.
Inclined to just use the hpl if can continue to get so reasonably (black fri sale), long as shifts same/better.
Work is barely 5mi away, so take a bike rather than truck whenever practical. Hard to explain, only one route there, but could go out of town and come back i suppose!

Pricing means a lot, agree. Same question applies if short tripping, what's the experience (analysis) showing HPL or any oil being a better short trip oil? Analysis is good marker point. HPL is good oil, not saying anything to the contrary. If HPL or another oil are similar in regular analysis, what would make one or the other better or worse in a short trip analysis over the same conditions over a number of OCI's to compare data points?

Leave early and take the long way. Isn’t that what motorcyclists do?

M1 10w40 4T or M1 20w50 V Twin are the real deal for 5,000 mile OCI's, I've posted many in the UOA section. Amsoil 20W50 in there right now, 3,500 miles on it as I didn't get as many miles this year. It'll go to 5,000 total miles which should be May/June next spring here in Colorado. Will report.
