Well Buster I spoke to them over email and phone yes they are an ester base group V.

I guess I could be mislead by AMSOIL with their niffty color charts and perfect oil I do use but perfect NO. I've read the used oil analysis. PP and the excitement for that oil which is a group III. I'm not sure about this forum it seems you have to use the "expert's" oil or your just a little person when we show what statistics are available who don't have all day to write on BITOG. As far as I'm concerned and know, Terry Dyson is the only expert and all around nice guy who made the time to email me explaining his findings on motor oils. I do have good information on Motul from Terry but I'll keep that to myself. People who are interested in Motul if I have any information I will help 'em out.


Ask them what % is ester. Only the 300V line is majority ester base. The others are GrpIII/IV/V blends. That is what I was told by one of their chemists several months ago. May have been over a year by now.

Saying you use an ester base oil means nothing if you don't know the % because Mobil, Amsoil, Redline, PP and most good synthetics use an ester base oils, just in lower amounts. Usually
I never said I was an "expert" either.

A company could formulate an oil using 1% ester and call it "ester-based".

Are all the Motul oils Ester base as they claim on their site, including Motul 4100 10W40 Technosynthese ?
They claim this Technosynthese is different to all other semi synths

"Technosynthese" is french for something that costs more than anything else, no matter what's in it.

Seriously, at the prices Motul asks for their top line products, no matter how good it is, I can't justify it for other than professional track use.

I agree Volvohead, for $50 Oz dollars, Motul 4100 in dont know what it is, i rather will use Mobil Supe 3000 5W40, which is GRoup 3. Motul Excess 5W40 PAO seems to be the best and reasonable priced of the lot around $60-$70 for the 5 litres.

To the earlier poster inquiring about shorter change intervals, the reason is based on the chemical stability of esters.

Esters can be chemically less stable than other bases. Moisture in particular is not their friend. So depending on environment, it may need to come out sooner. Motul and RL both suffer this factor. In a track setting where the oil is not in the crankcase that long, it's a non-issue. But it's why most mainstream oils designed for street duty and longer intervals use some combination of base oils.

Not True.
8100 series has only 3 most expensive oils: Eco-light 0W-20, X-lite 0w30 and Specific 506.01 0W-30, which have 10-12% esters (group V) and PAO-based (50%).
Other 8100 oils is PAO-based with 1-2% esters only!

lzb, that is great info on % ester in these oils. Do you have a link or can you explain where to find that? Most of the Motul info just says, "ester-based" on some oils and I would love to find out what those percentages are!

Look at MSDS MOTUL and consult with Motul support.
