I will be doing 2 x per year 7500mile OCI's with Purolator Pure One, CarQuest/Wix, & Honda filters on a recently purchased used 2003 3.5L Honda Odyssey with 69,000 original 1-owner miles. I live in Chicago's constantly fluctuating weather. Based on this info and living in today's tight economy, would you pay $12.50 for Motorcraft or $23 for Penz Platinum 5W20 to use in this vehicle? I already bought the Penz Platinum but have been doing some reading on great used oil analysis' with Motorcraft. I dont even know if Motorcraft covers Honda specs if anyone can help with that 1st. I use Top Tier Phillips66 gas in all my vehicles with occasional Techron Concentrate at every OCI.

thanks,

Pennzoil Platnium... Hands down a superb oil IMO!

M/C 5w-20 is no slouch look up the used oil analysis of the oil . It really would depent on how long your oil changer are .

Motorcraft, all the way. See what the OLM says after 6 months and dump it anyway. I'd take the saved money and toss in a bottle of ARX w/ the 1st run.

You don't need Techron at every OCI because you're using Top Tier gas already, once a year is more than enough. I use Techron once every two year before smog check in all my cars.

If you already bought the PP then use it for this oil change. I would add 1/2 quart Marvel Mystery Oil to your current fill and change oil 500 miles later with PP.

If you want to save some $, Valvoline Synpower has $10 rebate for 5 quarts, the final price after rebate is about $12-$13.

I would (and do) use PP. Motorcraft Blend is definitely a steal for what you get though.

But in the end, I just don't find spending $46 a year on oil all that bad.

Well, run the PP for 6 months now to be "safe" and see how the OLM looks. If you are still at 20-30% when you dump it, you would do fine with the MC next. Best to change oil right before the cold weather, so maybe this run or the next will be like 5 months to adjust the timing back to before dead winter.

I had a pcv plug and did not like the looks of the top end after removing the valve covers on a 4.6 F 150, using MC at 3000 OCI. I have switched to PP at 85K and have run it new in a 2.3 Escape and 2.3 Fusion at 5K OCI in hopes of it running cleaner. MC is worshipped here, and it is probably PCV related (my fault). Admittedly the 5K is extreme, but so was the 3K. I have no proof to any of my observations, I am just going by some of the syn guys opinions on syn and less burn off/sludge. I will put on my asbestos now.

I'm a complete money waster. I always change my oil at six months or 3K. I'll be doing that some day even when I start using Redline in the car. Yah yah I know... Well if any of you would like my used oil I can work something out with you. lol

I don't think it matters so go MC on cost basis. I don't believe you could ~double the OCI to offset PP cost.

PP is better but only buy it if you 'feel' better. Then it is $ well spent.

Otherwise keep the $ in your pocket.

There are a couple of 10k mile used oil analysis of MC 5W-20 in a Honda vehicle - oil is MORE than capable of doing 7500-mile OCI's...as the add goes - "Save your money!"

BTW, Ford changed the OCI from 5K in my 2005 (5W20) to 7.5K miles in later models. Of course they recommend MC.

If I was doing 10K I would 'feel' better using the PP.
