Helped a friend change oil on his 2001 Windstar (3.8L V-6) over the weekend. The FL400S is spec'd for his van on the Motorcraft website, so that's what I bought to put on there. But the filter we removed (put there by the Ford dealer at his last change) was an FL2005. What's the difference between these, could there have been any deleterious effect from running the wrong filter, and why would the dealer use a filter other than what was spec'd?

The FL2005 is shorter and has two ADBVs, it is specifically for the 2.0 Zetec engines.

Probably not as long as the other ADBV doesn't cover the stud. There may be a flow restriction, but probably nothing to worry about.

They could have been out of the proper filter and/or the tech did not think there was a difference. The tech could have grabbed the wrong filter by mistake or otherwise.

Bottom line it shouldn't have happened, let them know and keep it in mind when bringing a car in for service.
