Motorcraft FL400s or Purolator Equivalent

Hello All!

I have a saturn sl1 99, with 126k miles.

Currently I have been running the standard purolator specced for my saturn.

However I would like to start using a larger filter, so the oil stays clean looking longer. The oil turns dark very quickly, Its starting to stay cleaner longer with regular oil changes. I feel like a bigger filter would help with the cleaning process. (I understand color does not necessarily indicate bad oil.)


My question is, should I go with the Motorcraft fl400s? Or its purolator counterpart.

The reason I am asking is because I have read the motorcraft filter is only efficient up to 80% at 20 microns. But purolator advertises something like 97.5%?

So doesn't that automatically make the purolator better?

The Motorcraft has been tested at 94%, which makes more sense.

As far as the difference between the FL-400S and the Puro Classic, the Motorcraft has a thread end bypass and a silicone ADBV. But the Classic has higher efficiency and more media, as the thread end bypass on the Motorcraft takes up some room. And the Puro version 20195 is longer anyway, so there's quite a bit more media there.

If you are not having any start up noise issues I'd try the Classic first, it sounds more like what you're looking for.

The efficiency of the filter is what cleans the oil, not the size. A larger filter will help increase the holding capacity and help reduce the delta-P across the media some. But if you want "cleaner" oil, then run a high efficiency filter.

If the PureOne PL20195 fits, then it would be a good one to use because it's pretty large and has a 99.9% @ 20 micron efficiency.
 
I know you didn't ask about anything other than the filter, but it might also help to change the PCV valve if you haven't already, which tends to get gummed up. It may also help with oil consumption if your Saturn has started burning already.

I've had good luck filter wise with the Bosch D+ D3330 which I just put on when I gave PU a go.

Can't go wrong with the FL-400S, that's what I'm running in our Saturn. If you want higher efficiency, you could go with a Pure One PL10241 or the longer PL20195.

The PCV is acctually less than 10,000 miles old, so it should be good for a little while I believe.

I switched to a fixed orifice PCV on my 99 SL2. It helped eliminate a large plume of smoke from my exhaust when flooring it on the highway. Helped a little with oil consumption. Idle is better. Results may vary.

If your control rings are not completely gummed up a good synthetic oil may help keep them cleaner. I have had my 99 SL2 almost 10 years and tried everything to reduce oil consumption. On these engines new rings and pistons with drain back holes in pistons followed by synthetic oil tends to make them non oil burners.

If I had a to chose I would use a better quality oil. Even if you get a better filter your Saturn may just use more oil as it ages. Most of the time I run oversized filters. The last one I purchased was a FL400s.

Welcome to the site!

You are correct in that color has no real indication of lube health; it will turn dark quickly, but that does not infer the lube is in bad shape whatsoever.

You are making an incorrect assumption that using a larger filter will result in cleaner oil. It will generally add some holding capacity, but since most filters have WAY more ability to hold particulate than the normal OCI would ever present, it's a moot point. Going larger is adding capacity you'll never use, especially when you don't use all of what available now, most likely.

There is debate in theory about which would present a greater advantage:
1) larger filter slightly slows fluid flow rate through media, thereby allowing a better capture ratio, increasing efficiency
2) smaller filter would actually load more quickly, thereby providing ever smaller holes to capture particulate, increasing efficiency

I have yet to ever see a true study done where the DOE is to prove/disprove the size option relative to overall beta performance over the life of the intended OCI. I'm an SAE member, and I've not see a study unique to that mantra in their catalog, and most filter studies are older, which would even make some question the relevance in regard to today's engines and lubes.

You can upsize if you want but you're not likely to see any statisitically signficant shift in wear or cleanliness rates.

What improvement you might be seeing in "color" shifts is due to frequent OCIs and not your filter choice. Soot (the main ingredient in appearance of oil being dark) is generally sub-micronic in size when it starts out. And the oil add pack (specfically the anti-agglomerates/dispersents) makes every effort to keep the soot very small. As soot co-joins, it becomes larger and can become descructive in tighter clearance areas. So it is the oil that keeps soot small, and the filter is just along to catch BIG particles (typically 15um and larger with any real efficiency to brag about). Going to a larger filter is not going to have any effect whatsoever on the appearance of sub-micronic soot; it cannot even begin to hope that it would catch particles that small. From a macro view, 100 particles of soot 1um in size would "appear" as dark as 4 particles 25um in size. The filter can catch the big ones, but it can never address the small ones. Even bypass filters are not typically efficient at sub-micronic particulate.

In short, with conventionally filtered oil, soot size is not a matter of the filter selection; it's a function of the add-pack strength. I have personally run conventional oil out to 10k miles, and got stellar UOA performance (wear, insolubles, contamination elements, etc), indicating that the add-pack was still doing it's job. Frequent OCIs make oil "look" cleaner, because the rate of soot production is generally constant. If you change oil often, it will appear cleaner, even though the alternative (sub-micronic soot loading) has no real detrimental effect when properly monitored.

Additionally, filter makers will not warrant applications that you perceive to be "better", but they have not validated. If you don't use the filter they spec for your application, they are not bound to warrant the product should any failure happen; the burden of proof would be upon you and not them, per Mag/Moss ACT case law decisions. If you believe that the filter alternative would not fail, then this may be of no consequence to you. (I personally use some filters in un-spec'd applications; I'm willing to take the risk at times. However, it's a matter of convenience, not efficiency or capacity, I'm after.)

Try a gold (Pureone) or blue (Synthetic) 20195, and Castrol Edge 5w30.
Blue is online at Advanced Auto and Amazon...

Works for me...

PVC is Autozone - PCV1106 is OEM, PCV1109 is fixed orifice...
 
the FL-400s quieted KCJeep's Jeep when no other filter would, that carries a lot more weight with me than some supposed filtration percentage - also, the Motorcraft filter is quite impressive on the inside.

I plan to use one on my Lexus LS and filter price isn't even a consideration to me, so FL-400s vs. Purolator Classic to me is a no-brainer.
 
The Purolator PureOne and Puro's synthetic filters have a textured grip which really helps with installation and removal. PL20195 or PSL20195.

if more total oil in the system isn't a good thing, then why has Lexus gone from 5 quarts in my 96 LS to 9.1 quarts in the new one, which is essentially the same engine?
 
I just installed my first ever Motorcraft FL-400s. I have only driven about 20 miles so far and already love it. Yes, there seems to actually be a performance difference I tested on a 12% hill. How is this possible?

As you noticed I'm a huge fan of the FL-400s, but I thought I'd update since my previous post. A recent dissection I did of a Motorcraft and it's Puro Classic clone found much to my surprise that the Motorcraft had more media, not the Classic. I had thought the thread end bypass on the Motorcraft would eat precious media area but apparently not as much as I thought.

When it comes to the FL-400S and the Puro L20195 though the Puro is longer so it's likely a wash on media. An extra 75 cents for the Motorcraft gets you a silicone ADBV and thread end bypass so I'm all in for the Motorcraft on that one.

No idea on your driving observations with your new filter but you are really gonna love the FL-400s on start ups.

Other than ARCOgraphite, I've never heard anyone claim a performance difference due to choice of oil filter. There is no logical mechanism by which this can occur.
