I buy what I want and don't really notice the price.

I've been paying $4/qt for Mobil 1 for 12 years. Castrol Syntec was $4/qt last time I bought it in 1992.

Today, big price jump. $5/qt for Mobil 1 at both the auto part store and K-Mart. crap!!

I looked at regular oil ( whatever that means) and it's $2.75/qt. Last time I looked regular oil was $1.30/qt.

I've been in a vacuum too long.

Jon

Up here we pay $6.33 CDN ($4.17 US) per liter of Mobil 1 if in the single bottles, but in the 5L
jug it's only $5.08 CDN ($3.35 US) per liter. This is for trisynth though, I'm sure the price goes up when the new stuff arrives. Castrol Syntec is $6.66 per liter ($4.40) and rarely comes in
the bigger jugs so you can't save on that one.

Our conventional oil is usually $2.33 per liter ($1.54) but often goes on sale where you can
buy 5L for the price of 4L.

Sunday at Walmart Phillips Trop Artic and Havoline was 97 cents a quart.

Mobile 1 was 17.98 for a 5 quart jug

I had to go back yesterday and all the Mobil 1 was gone! Both Tri-Syn and Super Syn. A couple of pallets,,I wonder if it was sold or pulled?

Satterfi. You could always go over to the Edmunds Board (When its not Down). They take finding 99 cent oil to an artform over there. The quality be ****ed.

I've been reading the Edmunds board a lot lately and I found it funny when I read about one guy who picked up something like 60 bottles of the 99 cent oil because it was such a good bargain. Nevermind the fact that by the time he uses it all up they will probably have changed to the SM designation (by the way, does anyone know when they plan on doing that, or do they not plan that far in advance?)

Most of Amsoil's street oils retail for $5.70 per qt. Wholesale for $4.45 (4.25 in case quantities) plus about $0.69 per quart shipping charge (no charge if you happen to be able to pick it up at one of 8 regional warehouses). Anyone can get the $4.45 wholesale price (for a $10 per 6 month fee). So if you only buy 6 quarts in 6 months it comes to about $6.39 per qt. Pretty pricey.

However, the price comes down if you buy more. For example, I run two cars so I buy one case per year @ $4.25. plus tax $0.29 = $4.54/qt. I happen to live close enough to Orlando to pick it up while on a business trip. Plus, I typically run it at least 15000 miles (with a filter change and make up quart at 7500)

So assuming I drive each car 15000 miles per year
I would use a total of 12 qts * $4.54 = $54.48 plus the $20/per year fee = $74.48 total oil cost. Compare this with Mobil-1 at $4.59 per Qt and 7500 mile drain intervals. Over the same 1 year period I would need 20 Qts. at $4.91 (4.59 plus 7% tax) = $98.22.

Actually I use a total of about 21 qts (my 205,000 mile BMW uses a qt. every 2000 miles and would regardless of whose oil I use) so 21*$4.54 = $95.34 plus the $20 per year fee = $115.34 total. If I were to use Mobil 1 at $4.59 per qt and 7500 mile drain intervals, I would need 26 qts. X $119.34 plus tax $8.35 = $127.69. Either way, I figure I am paying less money for a better product.

From reading and following the most informative posts on this excellent site it has been my understanding that with the latest classification upgrade all oil prices will be going up.
Here where I live in northern Minnesota, the Wal Mart price of the Valvoline and Castrol has gone up to 1.62 and 1.66 a quart (from 1.19).
I'm sure that Pennzoil and Havoline will follow suit. I use the Mobil 1 and it is still at 3.39 a quart, but I am sure that will probably also go up soon.
Oh well, if the product is better then I am willing (and understanding) to pay more for it.
Considering the price and all that oil has to do in our engines we are still getting a pretty good deal.
Good Day,
Steven

That is a neat comparison Bob. Why the different drain intervals on the 7000? Are these simply what your samples were? How did the 7000 look after 12000 miles. Are the results posted?

Don

hmm the cost of the oil never really concerns me, it's very insignificant,

Conventional motor oil companies recommend 3,000-mile drain intervals

Conventional 10W-30 Motor Oil
*(40 quarts needed for 25,000 miles) @ $1.50/qt. x 40 = $60.00
8 Standard Oil Filters @ $5.00 per filter x 8 = $40.00
TOTAL $100.00

AMSOIL recommends 25,000-mile/1-year drain intervals

AMSOIL 10W-30 Synthetic Motor Oil
*(6 quarts needed for 25,000 miles) @ $5.70/qt. x 6 = $34.20
2 AMSOIL Super Duty Oil Filters @ $10.00 per filter x 2 = $20.00
TOTAL $54.20

* Comparison based on 25,000 miles driven per year and 5-quart oil capacity, with one quart top-off for filter change.

You save $45.80 per year using AMSOIL premium quality synthetic motor oil and oil filters.

I'm with bob on this one.

I have a speadsheet designed to compare the costs of oils at different drain intervals, so out I plugged in the varibles to see costs. Now this doesnt' take into account an any mid oil drain filter changes.

No, I personally don't have any oil analysis currently at these intervals. This was to demonstrate just how much it takes make oil price competitive and at what intervals it would take.

I personally do drains between 7500-10,000 miles, depending on my driving habits during that time, time of the year and such. I should be doing analysis, but, well, (i get lazy and don't get around to it most of the time

My last oil change was 10,000 miles but over 18 months with only 1 filter change at 6 months oil was still good for continued use!!

Well from what I have been reading here and seeing at the stores, I knew the Mobil 1 would be going up in price.
The Target store was selling (in Minnesota) the Mobil 1 for $3.39 a quart, went and looked tonight and it is now $4.79 a quart.
The kicker here is that they still have the Tri-Synthetic formula (last week it was the Super Syn).
Good Night,
Steven

I know this is old, but found these prices quite amusing, especially the Amsoil price increase to now compared to the other price increases to now. Seems Amsoil is the gouging company to me. Especially since I can buy Mobil 1 in a 5 quart jug for $22. That is $4.40 a quart for 0w30, regular price. Amsoil is $10.50 for 0w30 unless you pay them $20 for a yearly membership, which actually raises that price if you have only one car, and are changing it once a year. Hmm....makes me wonder why I use Amsoil.

As someone has stated...1992 price of Mobil 1= $4.00
..........................2009 price of Mobil 1= $4.40
..........................1992 price of Amsoil = ??????
..........................2009 price of Amsoil = $10.50
I know these are exact, but relatively close prices per quart.
These are both 0w30 prices with no membership fees.

Yeah you had me confused for a sec. I was like "what the heck is the OP talking about" and then I saw the date on the post.

Yeah...this post kind of threw me off too. Didn't realize how much some companies have changed their prices compared to others. Makes you kind of wonder...
