So a lot of people here have stockpiles of motor oils that can last them 5, 10, and in some cases, a few crazy people have 20-year stocks of motor oils.

I personally have a 15-year supply of motor oil, using 2L of Esso XD-3 0W30 per year.

What are your inventories, and do you honestly expect to ever be able to make effective use of them? Has your inventory of motor oil actually appreciated in value (mine has) over the past year? Are you worried that your motor oil inventories may actually become obsolete before they are fully depleted?

There was a thread a while back with this. Mine is as follows:
30 qts GC ($100)
16 qts M1 ($10, yes $10, clearance and such)
4 qts Havoline Synthetic ($4 clearance)
4 qts Valvoline Maxlife Synthetic ($4 clearance)
20 qts Valvoline MaxLife (FREE! after rebates)
20 qts Valvoline DuraBlend (FREE! after rebates)
5 qts Mobil 5000 (FREE! from online deal)
4 qts Valvloine All-Climate ($0.79/each after rebate)
2 qts Proline (Free from my dads garage when he moved)

So about $130 for 105 qts of oil, not too bad, with most of that (77%) on the GC.

most recent photo, not showing my last 5 GC and 5 Mobil 5000:

I am good on oil for about the next 3-4 yrs if I only do my 2 vehicles, but I have done 2 of my sisters cars lately and just had her pay for the filter (Puralator Premium, which was only $1.50 after rebates).

I actualy restrained myself and did not get any more MaxLife that AZ had the free rebates on.

I have about 140ish quarts myself, it's about a 5 yr supply. I know it's hard for everyone to pass up the 0.59 quart deal. here is what I do. I wait until free oil after rebate promotions come. seem to pop up every two months like clockwork in the past two years. stock up on that so your money isn't tide up. it seems to convince the fiance

I have 7 cases of GC. I actually took down my overall inventory. I had like 60q of M1 but returned a bunch of that (for profit) and distributed the rest to mom and mother-in-law. Other than a 12 case of Havoline Synth, I don't think I have an inventory going on. SUPERTECH Synth really made me swear off a continuing stash. that stuff has everything I want in an oil for $2.40 and I can get it anytime. It was nice to have some back-up oil after I "lost" the oil from a 5q jug in an "accident". That's it though.
I will brobally buy Chevron products as-needed.

These few cover all my needs:
Chevron
GC
T&S
ST Synth

That's pretty much it for me.

I don't like to have big inventories of anything on hand. I look at it this way, I could have my money sitting in bottles (or whatever else) on the shelf or sitting in a bank account or investment earning interest. I'd rather be earning interest and have immediate access to cash.

BTW, I have about 8 qts of oil on hand (5 GC, 2 M1 10w30, 1/2 Valvoline Syn Blend, maybe 1 M1 5w30). I was up to about 20 for a while, but decided to go back to only purchasing immediately before a change for the reasons above as well as having the freedom to buy whatever I wish, instead of being tied down to what's in the garage.

Of course, this doesn't mean I'll pass up a good sale, but I've resolved not to buy more than 1 or 2 changes worth.

Matt, I agree to a point. In my case, the $100 I spent on the GC is an investment, since the green is gone.
That and I would probably blow the $100 on something stupid anyway.

Once all this is gone, I will probably go with RP for my Elantra and some Trop Artic blend for $1 for my other cars, but that depends on what is around in 3-4 yrs.

we haven't had any of the GC stockpilers who got it for $1/qt a few months ago. the sale wasn't going on here.

I used some Havoline last summer that said, on the label, that Texaco Havoline was a supporter of the 1992 Olympics.

But it was used in a 1991 car.

I have a 2 year supply of Motorcraft SM 5w20 for my Ranger. I usually don't keep that much oil on hand, but it was being disco'd at Walmart for $1.52/qt. and I really didn't believe I
d ever see it that cheap again anywhere. I buy Havoline 5w30 by the case at Advance for the wife's Cavalier and only buy a cae when I'm nearly out.

I have about a hundred quarts. My dolllar tree is a tease and can barely keep troparctic 10w30 synth blend in stock. So when I see, I buy. Great marketing on their part.

Have two dozen of those and am itching for more.

The chevron supreme I stashed appreciated in value; I bought at $1.08 then walmart raised the price to $1.17.

I also increased my stash when SL went SM, since a new API grade happens about once every five years. I got some good closeouts; most of us did. Target Car & Driver makes good "beater oil" at $.68/qt. Haven't seen any oil of any grade at that price since, so, in a way, that has appreciated in value. Am waiting for a killer superflo deal from riteaid that I can double the rebates and get it for $.39.

It gets fuzzy because TA 10w30 is my "good*" oil where CS used to be, and I am getting it eight cents cheaper.

*I grade my stash beater/good/diesel-fleet/winter synthetic... each gets a shelf.

It's dumb, in a way, since I am poorly planning my heating oil purchases, and that evaporates any savings. My tank is mostly empty; I was expecting the price to drop in the summmer- no dice.

Yes, they are, and they even have a support in the back. I need to do something about that. I am probably going to get something else for those shelves besided particle board, maybe 1/2" aluminum?

I keep one quart M1 5W-40 for topping off in the trunk's cubby hole. Beyond that I do not keep any oil rations around the car, in the garage, in my apartment or bedroom.
