A couple of summers ago I invested in a jug of this stuff since it supposidly mixes with "any coolant" and is fine for 5 years or 250,000kms.

After pouring out a little at a time fromt the original jug, and mixing them in a separate container, I've realized that after using coolant test strips the coolant seems to be fit for the garbage.

I have some test strips that test not only the strength of the coolant, but also the reserve alkalinity and the pH. The strength and the pH tested ok b4 and after mixing with plain tap water, but strangly enough, the reserve alkalinity tested at below 3.0 before and after mixing with water.

i dont' understand this. Does coolant have a "shelf life"? have my test strips gone stale? Is this coolant garbage considering I did this same test on my BMW's coolant which has sat for a few years in storage, and when I tested all 3 areas they all came back just fine and good for a few more years/

Supposedly the reserve alkalinity is not an important measure anymore with extended life coolants because they don't drop in pH as fast as traditional coolants.

but I haven't even used it yet (straight out of the bottle) and it's already depleted.

OTOH BMW blue coolant is fine after 3 years of storage in my e30
