Wanted to wait and withold judgement until it was through. Alright, so about a week ago while perusing the internet, I come across a thread or two on cruze forums about 2011 LT and LTZ models having punctured condensers from rocks hitting them. The Eco model is unaffected because of the shutters over the condenser. The LS model I believe has it in a different location due to lack of intercooler.

Anyway, There is a TSB out for it, if the condenser is punctured by a rock, that when they replace it, fit a screen over it. I decided to be pro-active and have the screen installed before it can even become an issue. In addition, in the year and 15,000 miles I've owned it, the coolant level in the resovoir has dropped about 3/4 inch from where it was when I got it. That's not a huge amount, but I decided to mention it to the dealer and have it checked out while it was there, and if nothing else to have it on record.

Anyway I went to the dealer and told the service writer what I wanted, and he had to look up the TSB. He said he wasn't sure if he could do it, because while there was a part number, and a Labor/Job # for condenser replacement, there wasn't one for just installing the screen, as the TSB indicates to install upon replacement of the condenser. He talked to the service manager who said he would have no problems installing it for me if he can, but he would have to get approval from GM to do it under warranty. He said he would talk to them and get back to me.

Fast forward a few days, he calls me back and says that GM approved the screen install. GM covered both parts and labor "To ensure customer enthusiasm" (the same thing they put on the invoice when I had the TCM reprogram performed).

So brought it in last night, dropped it off. Got a call this afternoon telling me it was all set and ready for pick up. Drive down there, they had installed the screen, checked system pressure, and gave it the ok.

The coolant, they pressure tested and did a leak dye test, and couldn't find anything. They topped it off and advised me to keep an eye on it in the future, and recommended topping it off at oil changes. At least it's on record if something happens, but I'm not too awful concerned. The turbo does boil coolant after shutdown to keep it cool, you can hear it gurgling if you listen under the hood.

Anyway, I thought I would post a positive experience with a dealer and GM customer service for once.

Over the course of a year or the miles that you put on . I would tend to believe that some evaporation will occur.

It's typical of GM, they knew the problem of rocks hitting and puncturing the condenser without the screen, they should have a TSB to instruct dealers installing the screen before the condenser damaged by the rocks if request by customers. Preventing damages costs a lot less than repairing damages.

I'm surprised the previous generation Honda Civic didnt have that problem. You could see the radiator/condenser a full 6 feet away from the car.Getting airflow is one thing, protection is another.

have you thought about a turbo timer. i have one on my 97 ford 7.3l tdi, i have mine set a 7 minutes. turn ignition and the box keeps engine running, pull key, lock doors, and walk away. shuts off automaticly at user set time. this allows the turbo and egt temps to cool down, this is easier on oil and coolant and prolongs turbo bearing life also. my 2 pennies.

kc

ps most all turbo timers are antitheft too no key no drive.

I believe most if not all modern turbo's mostly use natural convection and a high point in system to keep coolant flowing after the engine is shut down. One the turbo temperature equalizes the coolant flow stops.

Nice to hear about a good experience. FWIW, I had the coolant level drop in my previous car (2007 Civic) a few times in its early life. Got a pressure test with no leaks detected, too. IIRC eventually it calmed down and stopped dropping. I wouldn't worry about it at all. Is this an open system or one with a pressure cap on the overflow tank?

There are lots of cars with condensers relatively close to the front these days, and visible, plenty of them without any kind of screen or cover at all. 8th gen Civic coupes at least had a grille over it. Seems like some of these cars tend to get "rock broke the condenser" complaints a lot and others do not. It does seem like a screen would be a good idea. I should probably get around to putting one on my car some day...

I know the Condenser on the Montana had to be replaced due to a pin hole. Likely from a rock. It does seem like a good idea. I might investigate doing something myself on my Vic.

Is there a problem with sharing the dealer's name? Maybe others can benefit from their good work.

You can seen condenser's through the grill of most all cars, what makes the Cruze's more susceptible to rock punctures?

I ripped off the front bumper and put a screen in front of my Cruze's condenser shortly after picking it up. Yeah, I have the shutters, but they don't operate around town. Both our cars have screens I installed in the grille before the condenser.

Think about it. How many car owners are even going to know WHAT a condenser IS. let alone spend enough time on the internet to find out about a TSB for a screen to protect it. I doubt any manufacturer has TSB out for things customers request, such as this.

I'll get a picture of it later.

Some years ago I read about car companies having secret warranties. They were aware of certain problems, but would only do a warranty repair IF the customer requested it. It seemed a bit shady to me. The moral of this story: it never hurts to ask.

Thanks for sharing your positive story.

My mother in law had one of these "secret warranty" done on her Firebird. Car was only a few years old but the paint started to come off in sheets leaving the primer coat. She was well out of warranty but a good dealership customer when it came to her servicing. They had a district GM rep look at the paint and wrote off a new paint job without blinking. Basically told my MIL to not advertise to everybody that they were picking up the tab out of warranty.
