Mos2 for gears; clarification

Thinking of trying this additive in the F100's 9" rear. Just want to make sure it's compatible w/ the unit(which will use 80w90).

Why can't it be a locker? Lockers don't have clutches; they are mechanical.
 
I don't believe it is suitable for manual transmissions at all!
Great for gears and bearings, but the synchros would not be able to grab well, and that is their job!
Keep moly out of manual transmissions!

Because if you put it in, and it fails due to the additive or additive/fluid combo, however unlikely, you wont be getting the company to take the blame because you did not follow the instructions.
 
I wouldn't put it in a manual transmission. Rear end? Maybe. Transfer case? Maybe.

Transmission? No. Synchronizers can't do their job if there's a coating of moly on them.
 
Have you done a VOA of the 80W90 to see if it currently contains moly?

For an 80W90, I would use a fully formulated gear oil such as Schaeffer's Supreme #293 Blend with soluble moly already in the oil.

As I have stated in past threads, do you think we formulators formulate lubricants and leave out certain additives just so someone can sell you a third party additive that may not play well with the current formulation?

Bear in mind there are two kinds of moly's: micron-size suspended moly sulfides and there are soluble molys (Molybdenum di-2-Ethylhexyl Phosphorodithioates) and each has its own place in specific formulations.

I agree that some fluids may be just about as good as you can get them these days. However, I don't know enough to conclude that no fluid could be made more effective for a particular application with the use of a third party additive. That point of view doesn't make a lot of sense to me.

Molekule, it would be easier if I knew what you knew. I could make a better choice of what to do and what not to do.

There may be a reason why they don't put MOS2 in some gear oils. It may not be compatible in all applications. 75W-90 oil can be used in rear ends, front ends, manual transmissions, and maybe a few other things. As someone stated above, MOS2 is may not be compatible with synchros. Another reason why they may not put the MOS2 in the gear oil is that it will eventually settle to the bottom, and a customer may complain that the oil is defective because it has dirt on the bottom of the bottle.

I emailed Lubro-Moly and asked if their 75W-90 gear oil contained MOS2 because their was nothing listed on the MSDS. I also asked if I could mix their MOS2 gear additive with their gear oil. They said that their gear oil didn't contain moly, and that the MOS2 additive wouldn't hurt anything. I plan to put their gear oil in my (trucks) rear end.

Moly-disulfide powder suspended in an oil carrier may or may not stay in suspesion and here is why.

All lubricant formulations have a certain percentage by volume (or weight) of surfactants and/or dispersants to make sure everything mixes well and stays mixed. I.E., let's

Adding and additional material may result in saturation of the mixture, allowing fallout.

Let's say I am designing a Marine gear lube: I have about 3% by volume of dispersant in my formulation and I add my additive package and some extra rust inhibitors. Everything stays clear and in suspension.

Along comes a guy with a can of suspended moly in an oil carrier and dumps it in his lower unit along with my gear lube thinking he is a lubricant engineer or chemist and knows better.

He drains the oil at the end of the fishing season and thick black stuff comes out.

Guess who gets the blame for a sludgy looking oil?

What he has done is dumped in some extra material that the oil cannot keep mixed or in suspension.

Hmmm... I would never have thought of that. A definite concern!

In normal doses, Lubro Moly does not seem to be settling out of suspension in motor oils.
If I ever used it in a rear end, I'd mix it well first, then add the oil to the unit.

Why don't you just buy a gear lube formulated with Moly?

Why don't you just buy a gear lube formulated with Moly?


I'm just exploring options at this point, not set on the Mos2. Schaeffer's is a good option, which I've used before.

If I decide on using Mos2 additive(which I feel is completely safe), it's more so to try it out. I'm not expecting miracles or anything.

My question was simply; is it safe? Not whether I should use it or not.
