More than 1 year on Amsoil

I used Amsoil Signature 0w30 and an EA filter in my truck last spring. I put less than 2K on since. I drive it only if I need a truck, 75% highway. Truck stored inside (heated this winter) What should I do? sample? Change out? Stop wasting my $ on good oil that I only use for a few K miles?

The truck is 10 years old 28K miles, Garage kept, and had a synthetic oil change yearly since new.

Unless you suspect there is something wrong with your engine, no need to run a used oil analysis at those extremely short miles. SSO is a very stout oil. I have about 18K miles, and may change it at 20 months or so.
 
The truck runs well. The only reason I'm worried is that this is the only engine I own that I have never run a used oil analysis on.

If it were short trips where the engine didn't have time to warm up, I'd say change it due to possible condensation and fuel contamination. But since you state it's been driven highway miles only, heck, I'd let it go for another whole year.
 
Out of less than 2K total last year. 1 trip was 750 miles. Most other trips at least 10 miles. The kicker is it was moved in and out of the garage about 10 times with out going off the proprety. When this happens, I do tend to let it run until it's warm before shuting it off, and take it for a ride in the next day or two.
 
Just so you know....if the engine pops a bubble and burst into flames and spins a bearing, Amsoil will not cover under the warranty.

With that said, I would leave it in and sample UOA every two years until the oil is no longer usable. Maybe just a filter change every year for the next decade.
 
hahaha you funny. You worry about the oil when you should be worrying about the truck. What about all the other fluids.. like brake and coolant?

Why do you have truck that you rarely use? As far as spending $$ on the oil, thats actually a good thing... most other oils would be toast by now or getting there.

I'm headed out to the garage for a tear down and NDT inspection.

75% highway and being stored in a heated garage. As long as the truck is driven at least 30 minutes a few days to a week after a short trip, I'd say that oil/filter combo should be good for about 2 years. UOA would be the best way to determine, but IMO you'll be fine.

Coolant and oil changed yearly, PS and Brake fluid flushed every 2 years, Man trans, both diffs, and xfer case changed once with amsoil products. Nitrogen in tires. Descant in interior over the winter. I was a ASE and Chrysler Master tech before I went back to school. I now Commission Operate and Maintain Power Plants.

Sorry man but you hit my button with "Why do you have truck that you rarely use?" Lets just say trucks and gas are expensive. I feel it is ignorant to commute with one person and little or no cargo in an expensive to buy and maintain 4600 lb vehicle. I buy a very nice used econo-box every 6 to 8 years, and maintain it well also.
I'm not sure how I compare to you but my cost of vehicle ownership over 20 years and my eco footprint are quite a bit less than the average guy.

I own a truck, 4 other vehicles and use them when appropriate.
 
Wow, that engine is about to burst into flames. I feel it's my duty to help a fellow BITOG'er, so please leave the truck in the heated garage and I'll be up shortly to take it off your hands for you. And don't worry about changing the oil before I get there, I'll take care of it later after it's seen some more use

LOL Get in line.

On paper the truck is worthless, but it's basically worth as much as a new truck to me. It also has a great deal of sentimental valve. I won't bore you with the stories.

I also have a 1967 Barracuda 28k miles, original Paint to brake linings. I even have original belts hoses and tires (not currently on car for safety reasons) I drive it less than 1K per year.

I know Peter I should probably commute with the Cuda in the winter also.
 
Patman has done 2 consecutive 2 year OCI's using Castrol Synthetic (GC) on his Golf …

UOA … 2 years 7600 miles, oil was fine.

UOA … 2 years 7300 miles, oil still had lots of life left in it (TBN 5.33).

You could run 2 years 4k miles easy with that Amsoil.

Why would other oils be toast by now???
