Frazier Air Permeability was tested on a BMW spin-on filter and an Amsoil SDF34.
Results are expressed in CFM/sq. ft. @ .5 in. of water.
BMW: Holy flow Batman. No wonder my oil pressure went up when I went to the BMW filter. Not only does the media flow like crazy. It has tons of media area and awesome contruction, It is almost a work of art. It has 66pleats 230sq. in., which is about as much as can fit and they are perfectly spaced. (As a comparison the SDF34 is the exact same size filter, the difference being it has a much lower bypass setting and different type ADBV, and it has only 151sq. in. of media.) The core is the most open I have ever seen yet. 1/4" hole perforated metal. Very nice. The shell is stronger than the Amsoil. Uses what appears to be urethane potting compound. Cell/synthetic blend media.
Amsoil: One good thing about it, their claim of cell/synthetic/glass mix media is true. Verified by microscopic examination. Unlike M1. I did not like that the core was not potted into the top cap(too short). It was completely loose with about 1/8" gap. Also didn't like that it also looks it would pose additional restriction. It is slotted perf metal and the slots only open about 1/32". Media area 151sq. in. and not spaced evenly. Uses plastisol potting compound.
Moral of the story, if you have a BMW don't waste your money on a K&N filter(it will actually flow less). For that matter if you have a 3/4-16 thread and same gasket size, consider the BMW if you want flow and quality. IMHO. And if you have a BMW don't use anything else. This baby rocks. And for only $4something with a BMWCCA discount.
I am impressed that Amsoil is truthful about their media composition. But still only flows a little bit more than the M1 though. I would pick them over M1 if you still don't believe everything on this site about flow, etc by Terry and Bob and want a high eff. filter. Quality a concern though.
Amsoil actually used to spec this SDF34 as a replacement to this BMW filter which is kind of scary. They now list a SDF57. I don't know what that is.
