I noticed Jegs sell these for $7. Who makes these filters, and are they as good or better than say a Bosch Premium or Wix or any other of the better filters?

Save your money. Mopar definitely changes their filter suppliers over time. I've seen designs that appeared to be Fram and others Wix. Certainly nothing special to justify $7.

Exactly what Onequart said, Mopar gets their filters in batches, from the lowest bidder. Sometimes that lowest bidder is Fram.

Hmmm guess I'll avoid the Mopars then. There was a guy on www.jeepsunlimited.com forums who eliminated some lifter tick at cold startup by switching to the Mopar filter. But seeing as though the oil experts recommended against them I'll take your word for it.

They're probably perfectly acceptable filters. Overpriced but acceptable. It may also be that the person you mentioned had a problem with their previous filter that the Mopar filter solved. But the fact these filters are sourced based on low bidder means you won't know if the one you buy is the same that person bought, or that the next one you buy will be the same as the last. Not that Mopar is unique in this respect...

It seems to me the only good reason to pay the extra for an average OEM filter would be for a restored vehicle where OEM labels mean something.
