I think we've covered this subject, several times, previously. The coolant temp, pumped thru the radiator for cooling, will reach a stable operating temperature somewhere around 212F & remain there.

The oil in the sump, circulated thru the heat zones of the engine, sees continually higher temps when the outside ambient temps are over 100 degrees F.

Unless an oil cooler is utilized, the heat energy in the oil must be absorbed by the cross sections of the oil galleys & sump. And this is cooled only by ambient air flow.

Higher ambient temps yield less cooling.

I don't think you'll find general agreement with this statement.

Per the Briggs Engine Oil Temperature Chart

And statement at the bottom of the chart:

* CAUTION: Air cooled engines run hotter than automotive engines. The use of non-synthetic multi-viscosity oils (such as 5w30 or 10w30) in temperatures above 40°F (4°C) will result in higher than normal oil consumption. When using a multi-viscosity oil, check oil level more frequently.

Back to my comments, the lighter viscosity base oils in 5W or 10w30's are more volatile than a straight 30 weight.

Straight 30's are a very stout oil for applications seeing high heat, ie., automotive use in hot temperatures.
 
The Statement from the Briggs chart is totally outdated. It's been written ages ago and never been updated!!!
Look they still mention the SF standard that's been in use how MANY years ago?
"Use a high quality detergent oil classified For Service SF, SG, SH, SJ."

It's not outdated given that there are lawnmower specific oils available that only claim to meet API SG. They might even contain higher additive levels that aren't allowed in newer API categories.

This weekend, I tried starting up a 4.5 HP Briggs using Mobil Drive Clean Blend 10w30 - it was about 72 deg F. Started smoking and spewing oil spray out the exhaust for a few seconds. I'm thinking that I need a SAE 30. Or maybe a drop cloth when I start the thing.

Yep, my Craftsman mower with a Techumseh engine that was purchased in 1997 says to use SF or SG oil. My brand new (last week) Honda engine generator says to use SH or SJ. In both cases they call for API categories that were outdated for automobile applications.

You took my poorly written statement out of context (my fault)

I intended to say that Monogrades have a place and are appropriate for air cooled motors such as lawnmowers.
