My step father had a cardiac procedure performed at the Cleveland clinic too. He had the MAZE procedure to treat his atrial fibrillation. He did very well all things considered. Only problem was he choked very badly on a potassium pill. Respiratory called in etc etc... A bad deal. He told me later that the open heart surgery didn't come close to taking him out of here bit the potassium pill almost did. So if your mom needs a potassium pill that's very large... Get them to put it in applesauce and let set in there for awhile to get broken down in it. Makes those 40 mEq pills far easier to take.
