I'm not a religious person, but today is the kind of day I don't care.

My mom is currently undergoing Mitral Valve replacement surgery at the Cleveland Clinic due to Rheumatic Valvular disease, a severely stenotic MV with severe MR (mitral regurgitation) causing NYHA Class 3A Congestive Heart failure, Pulmonary hypertension, and Tricuspid regurgitation. This is a planned procedure after a Trans-thoracic ECG and cath a few weeks ago.

She will be receiving a Mechanical Mitral valve, and possibly a mechanical Aortic valve, depending on the condition it is in when they operate.

She's in the best hands possible, but that doesn't stop me from worrying. She's 43 this year. I cannot be there today due to my new job, but I will be heading down to see her tomorrow night. The clinic assures us she has good outcomes due to good overall health, and her Left atrium isn't noticeable enlarged, and her Ejection fraction is still in the good range (60% +/- 2) But, still worried. It's open heart surgery, after all.

Just wanted to talk.

Thanks guys

Prayers have gone out in support of your mother and your family.

--Drive carefully when you go to visit tomorrow.

Best wishes, Roy

Scary stuff. I remember when dad had his open heart. I couldn't be there either (and they said it was "routine" so "don't worry"); but I still made good time getting there a short time later to visit.

Best wishes.

Went through a similar procedure because of a birth defect about 10 years ago. It is a big deal, but Cleveland Clinic is the best place in the world to be.

With your mom's age, she should have a pretty quick and uneventful recovery. I was older at the time, but only had to spend 4 nights in the hospital, 1 week off work and then back to normal. I run, ski, bicycle, hike, travel and feel great.

When you see you mom tomorrow night, be aware patients are really pumped full of fluids during these procedures so she may look very puffy. This is normal and temporary. Let us know how things progress.

Good luck.
Couldn't be anywhere better than the Clinic. They all work on salary there, not on how many procedures they do. They are the best.

All the best to you and your mom. Its scary to think about these things, but she is in great hands, and is young enough that she should be able to bounce back well. We will be thinking of you and her.

Prayers for you Ma,

The post op stage is the one you want to keep an eye on her. Ask them explain to her care/meds/what to expect/dos donts post op when you get there.

Word came a couple hours ago that she is out of surgery, the surgeon said things went very well, and they only ended up replacing the Mitral valve. She is in ICU now and they anticipate moving her to a normal room tomorrow unless things change. Fortunately my dad, grandparents, and siblings were able to be there today. The cleveland clinic is very good, and went over with my dad and grandfather her post-op care once she goes home.

I prayed for you and your mom Nick R. Glad she is doing OK, and I will continue to pray for both of you

Hope all goes well with the recovery ... good wishes and prayers sent your way.
