Moly in oil - if not important, why article on it?

Is this really true? I always thought it was the sulphur that is corrosive to yellow metals, such as in Sulphur-Phosphorus EP additives and MoS2. MoS2 is a sulphur containing compound consisting of moly and sulphur, perhaps this one varient of moly has given the entire element a bad name?
 
The molyslip product does say they add corrosion inhibitors to their formulation, probably because they're needed

"MolySlip is a colloidal suspension of molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) in a high grade, multi-viscosity engine oil that contains anti-foam agents and corrosion inhibitors"

Whatever the friction modifier is used, I believe you have to be careful as a formulator to get it right. A couple of years ago I posted a link to a study to this site that compared the traction coefficient in HDEO's and roller cam wear in high speed medium duty diesel engines, reduce the traction coefficient too much and the roller will start to slide at certain points of the revolution, thus creating increased wear and flat spots on the cams or cam followers necessitating early replacement of these components.

Havoline have told me that they don't use Moly as an anti wear agent, they use it primarily as anti oxidants. Thats why they dont use as much as what other companies may.

ah yes of course, good call. I guess I'm wondering if moly can be used as an AW additive without compouding it with sulphur? Is there a sticky or article that explains the role, pros and cons of additives? (like B, Ca etc..)

Yes there are sulfur-free molybdenum AW additives. You should find plenty in this link to learn about additives: http://www.rtvanderbilt.com/petro_2.htm#50490

But I doubt you'll see much there on Boron (can be many things) or Calcium (detergent).
