Moldy Toilet!

So my roommate moved out several months ago. On a whim I enter the space he vacated to see if anything is amiss. Notice the toilet on that side of the apartment is all dry. Pop the top, and it's quite moldy. Blech!

Donned a painting respirator, some eyewear and a stout set of yellow kitchen gloves he conveniently left behind, then proceeded to attack the buildup with Lysol wipes. After 15 minutes of scrubbing everything is clean, and I fear less for my health.

Note to self: flush unused toilet every week.

Don't shut the water off to the toilet either, it will all evaporate and there will be a straight shot from the septic tank to the inside of your house.... Believe me on this one.

Chlorine bleach will quickly destroy rubber parts, for example the flapper valve.
 
I figured he had a moldy tank ("Pop the top"). I've never seen a moldy toilet bowl. Why are people such swine?
 
I don't know. This guy was pretty bad. Not the person I would have wanted as a roommate, but he was here when I got here. Now he's gone, and the place is a lot cleaner.

Yes, it was the tank that was moldy.

There was one of those "bowl cleaner" tablets in the tank that ended up making things a lot worse. It broke up into a lot of solids that gummed up some of the holes in the rim. Took a lot of flushes to make it better.
 
One of my roommates is lazy and cheap, to the point that he won't buy a toilet brush or a can of Comet. Eventually the "buildup" on the inside of his toilet bowl got so foul we could smell it in the living room. Just opening the door to his bedroom made most people gag. Eventually I had to clean the toilet for him just so I could be in my living room without smelling it. I guess spending a total of $5 on some cleaner and a brush and a couple minutes of time every week is just too much for some people.

Thankfully, the lazy and cheap roommate is moving out this summer.
