Model 3 Highland first look

Even though Tesla messed it up a little bit recently.. they give you a more normal/comfortable interior in the Model S .. and that is their gem or upper crust.. Why do they give you that ?? hmmm ??

Even something like a Jetta , looks WAY more comfortable, inviting and attractive.. even looks more expensive than a Model 3 on the interior IMO.

Jetta dash. This may get my vote of favorite beyond just this thread. WOW.

It's pretty good. The new GTI isn't as great as the Jetta to me. The Jetta is closer to the previous GTI which may be small car interior perfection. The materials are a hint nicer in the GTI than the Jetta and at least in the US still had analog gauges. I always liked the standard style A/C controls. I'm not thrilled with the new one and I've driven a couple. I thought I'd be buying a new GTI this weekend, but surprisingly my repairs got approved and it isn't being totaled.

I was tempted to go with a Jetta GLI if the car wasn't going to be saved.

I will say I think the newer Model S interior is better than the previous one and of course I'd select the regular wheel option. I also don't think the behind the wheel display will make it through a full redesign and really in an EV it's basically unnecessary. There's very little that needs to be displayed in front of you. Literally all I care about that would be in front of me is my speed and contrary to many saying so you aren't looking across the dash to see it. It's out of the corner of your eye on the top left corner of the screen and takes less of a glance than looking behind a steering wheel. I would not be pleased with this setup in a gas car with the additional info I want.

I did try sliding on plywood once when it was snowing here, and you are right; it does get a bit complicated. I also see that the steering wheel rolls like the Skoda Felicia from 1996.
at least Felicia from 96 had headlight washers. Doesn't look that Tesla have figured out how to make them🤔

Torrid, you’ve got a good eye. Imma <chuckle> poke at you a li’l bit and admit that I am also quite at home with the cockpit in my plebe-spec F150! (Cheers fellow enthusiast!)

I had a 2017 F150 XLT previously and thats a very no nonsense interior. I wish regular A/C controls were sticking around and the screen in that was great without being some overkill big screen. I had this center console too, just like this but it had the column shifter. Where the shifter is in this picture was another pocket. I couldn't believe I couldn't find a picture of how it looked. It must not have been that common of an option. I really don't see a need for screens being bigger than this.

You're right about the speedometer. Before I bought the Tesla I didn't like the idea of a digital speedometer and liked even less that the readout would be off to one side. That was actually one of my big reservations.

But it works. I'm not even aware that I've looked at the speedometer but since I do know what speed I'm going I must.

I agree with you about the steering wheel. Can't imagine buying a car with a yoke. As I've said before, not every idea is a good one.

I'll bet the engineers at Tesla could design a car in which everyone faced backwards (which would be a great safety feature in the event of a head-on crash) and the driver steered by using a large screen in front of him. Except that no-one with any sense would buy one. So Tesla engineers I'll save you some time. That's one idea you can put in the round bin.

That is basically mine - mine has the column shifter. The materials are… “eh” and the plastic is sagging and trying really hard to not squeak too much, but yeah - climate knobs, buttons and volume knob… easy to work completely by feel.

I have the same screen, used in night mode 24x7. Too many clicks needed to black it out and night, and CarPlay won’t dim at all at night, so nighttime Nav wants to kill your vision (enough that I might not use CarPlay at night), but beside that I find it functional.

As much as I’ve considered switching to an SUV, this one does too many things well and right now an SUV would dictate pulling a trailer about once a week. but the v60 and x3 in my parking lot catch my eye…. Daily.

I agree. Driving position, placement of buttons and knobs all just worked very well for me as well. I really miss my MK7 GTI.

I may have to see it in person. Been a few months since I’ve been in a Tesla, and many years since I drove one.

To be honest, having sat in a new MB EV in the showroom, and seeing how MB is building out their charging centers, I would choose an MB at the moment, were I to choose an EV. As you know, I am not averse to an EV in our driveway.

I will also be very interested to see how the Volvo line-up transitions to EV. I am used to, and like, the Volvo vernacular - the design language and appointments. The Volvo seats are an industry best, always have been, seeing the rave reviews about the seats in the Highland, looks like Tesla is finally catching up in that regard.

To be honest, once again, the plywood feeling seats in the Model S really turned me off when I drove it. I have an S class, and several Volvos, with wonderful seats. I did not like Tesla seats on first impression. Even my Tundra had better seats (at the time) and they are not very good compared with the industry.

Also, we agree on how great the Taycan looks, and the press loves it as well. I note that it has great seats, and manual controls for some functions.

Finally, take a look at that Airbus cockpit. Critical functions, functions that simply must work the first time and every time, are all switches or levers. Fuel pumps, fuel transfer valves, bleed valves, hydraulic pumps, generators, and yeah, speed brakes, landing gear and flaps - all operated by mechanical controls - because they have to be operated right now, not 5 seconds from now after going through a menu, or relying on voice commands in a noisy environment.
I also find knobs, switches and levers much easier to use in turbulence. The few avionics I have used with touch screen interfaces are maddening in turbulence.

Didn't know what this was but looked it up and I think it's a solid no on headlight washers.

I do remember those with a lot of Mercedes-Benz vehicles in the 1980s.

Mercedes-W124-300E-FEATURES-1170x780.jpg
My BMW has them. My BMW X5 had them. My 2007 and 2011 Skoda Octavia had them, my 1998 lancia Lybra had them, etc, etc.

It is THE BEST thing after cut bread.

I’d like to see an all inclusive deal, include home charging installation and a discount rate from PGE…and less than $30k.

Spot on. This is a refresh; much more than the visible front/read sheet metal. But the cars will become stale; they probably are now for some prospective customers.
Become? In a place like Souther California where they have been everywhere for years they are becoming a Nissan Altima level of excitement.
