Mobil1 ESP 5W-30 vs Shell Helix Ultra ECT 0W-30

That IS NOT how pumpability is measured!
There is a reason why oils are 0W or 5W and that has nothing to do with pour point.
I said I thought and didn't claim to be right on the about 10deg difference in pour point vs pumpability. The oils do spec -42C and -51C for pour points. I never referred to 0W or 5W as references, it just happens the oils are 0w-30 and 5w-30 and the one with lowest PP temp is Shell 0w-30, at least that's what I was talking about.
I never spoke on measuring pumpability. I don't try to promote a brand or product, nothing against Mobil.

This doesn't hold in general though, that's all. There are 10W oils with -60 C pour points.

Thanks everyone for all of your opinions! I have chosen the Shell due to the price and better cold start perfomance. It's just a 2.0 Audi so probably never have had such a good oil in it. Kinda using the wrong oil at the moment, the Mobil 1 FS has a lot of Ca in it which is a LSPI consern even if VW never have had problems with it. Better safe than sorry.

The engine is a cam belt driven one but only to one cam but it drives the other one with a chain and the HPFP has cam follower bucket (which is the biggest problem with this engine) so I want the best cold start so those dont wear out pre maturely.

Also the Shell being 166 USD for 20L it's mega cheap

I’m actually between these two oils as well in the opposite climate of Palm Springs.

Here, cheapest I find Euro LX is $44/6L and ESP 0w30 is $28/5L. I had some Euro LX laying around so used that on my Macan S which has a EA839 engine. I have about 4L left and will probably mix it with the ESP 0w30 for my next change.

I’m supposed to be using C20 oils but I’m using C30 for just peace of mind and I don’t mind the slight mpg hit.

Mobil1 ESP 5W30. It will be more shear stable.

Shear stability is overhyped IMO. I seriously doubt ExxonMobil is using inferior VM in their 0W-30 ESP product (or any product for that matter) and the tendency is highly dependent on engine design. None of my engines have an issue with mechanical shear of the VM (except the Sienna to a minor degree) so as far as I’m concerned it’s not a consideration.

Then i'll go with the Shell due to being a 0W oil and like 50 dollars cheaper for 20L!
Also living in Sweden and just want to ask where you find the Shell oil to a good price ?
In the early 2000 years I bought Shell oils in Södertälje to good price but havent found any place to buy oil to good price the last 10 years exept for ordering from Germany.

Found it on Weboil, around 1800kr for 20L at the moment. Probably not Swedish based but fast delivery.

I think in Södertälje, Södertörn petroleum has it over the counter for kinda cheap, but I never buy over the counter anyway because it is so much cheaper online.

at 5000 miles OCI ??? what shear?

Just made an order on 3x5L Helix Ultra SP 0w20 from Weboil. Dexos 1 gen 2 fits me fine to the Chevy
I got some Mobil 1 AFE 0w20 at home so i will decide later on if I go for the Mobil1 or Shell for the winter. Been running on Mannol for a while but found out that they not have the Dexos specification by licence as they say so will go for a Dexos licensed oil next oil change.

If I recall correctly pour point isn’t that big of a deciding factor compared to cold crank numbers. I could stand corrected. Someone chime in.

As for the oils, I’ve used both, living in Canada, in a major city, we don’t see temps go past -27 (without windchill) during winter, even on the worst days, here and there sure.

Both oils are great.
