I will be running Mobil Clean 7500 synthetic blend with 3.5-4k OCI and will be using M1 EP filters. Since these filters are rated for Extended Performance Intervals, would I be safe to change them every other oil change?

I've read on these forums that if you don't change your oil filter with every oil change, it defeats the purpose of the oil change.

Would I be safe or will the filter have too much build up to filter effectively the new oil and remain in for another 4k?

You would be safe I am sure but why put clean in with dirty left in the filter? IMO you are better off with a less expensive filter and change it every time.

I'd leave the M1 EP filter on for 15k miles. Many won't agree with me, but I think it would be perfectly fine to leave the M1 EP filter on for 15k miles. Yes, there will be some old oil left in the filter, but I don't think it'll hurt a thing.

I would say that they would probably be OK for 8K miles. However, without a quality UOA w/PC you will never really know for sure.

I've done this on what might be considered low mileage OCIs. However, I do pull the filter and drain it out for a few min.

You should never reuse a filter after it has been removed. The gasket has been compressed and could leak if reused!

OP, just go buy AAP or ST filters and change it everytime you change the oil.

I've been doing it for years on various vehciles and never had a problem with a re-seal. Just wipe down - then re-oil both ends that meet before re-installation.

the thing is that I got a bunch of these for really cheap ($2.25) and would hate to dump them at 3-4k intervals. Would the oil be that bad at this interval. Synthetics are pushed to 8k on single intervals with no filter changes in between.

Not only is it OK for you to run that filter 8K miles, it may be preferable to have a little old oil left in the system. IF it is true from some of the observations made over in the UOA section, namely, that wear metals seem to spike up just a bit in brand-new oil, then, as the oil "ages", the wear numbers tend to drop; well, maybe a little of the older oil left in the system is better than just OK. Maybe it is even preferable?

I know I run Wix filter 51365 in my Subarus for 15000 miles, changing the oil at 7500, and the UOA's are at least as good on the second half of the filter run as the first.

YMMV. That's why you should do your own UOA's to make sure.

If you're sticking with the same oil, and that OCD enhanced
Additive clash when switching brands, and the issue of dirty motor oil out of the bottle, is what is probably causing that UOA wear spike early on after an oil change.

Additive clash seems to be ruled out because there are several oil soup UOAs that look great. But, basestock clash is also to be considered. Those that UOA frequently while switching brands do see this.

Magnified new oil from the bottle, along with particle counts, really makes me wish that motor oil would have ISO level bottling filtration like some industrial lubes. And, some manufacturers are against prefilling filters because they know that new oil quality isn't guaranteed clean.

I will also start using these after 2 cycles of auto-rx. The car currently has 109k on its VQ30 motor ('99 Nissam Maxima)

so essentially the filter will get less clogged with three 4k oci on the same filter versus a user with synthetic that runs the same filter and oil for 15k?

If using a good quality, economically priced oil and if you're changing it often, then doing a few oil changes with the same filter should be fine. For instance, say your filter is a PITA to change, my suggestion would be to use a good quality filter (like the M1 EP that you're using) and change the oil every 3000 or 4000 miles, and then the filter every 10,000 or so. Maybe three 3333 mile OCIs and then the filter changed on the last interval at 10,000.

If you wanted to do 5000 or 6000 OCIs, you could easily skip every other filter change.

If you change the oil before it's totally depleted, then leaving some residual oil unchanged in the filter will not cause any harm.
