I have been stocking up on Mobil Super courtesy of the OR and AZ specials of late ($9.99 or $10.43 out the door for 5QTs and a filter). Today was the last day of the special at AZ and they had started replacing the window posters with the new specials.

I could not help but wonder how the Mobil compares to Castrol as they have Castrol GTX on special now for $19.99 (5QTs and a filter). I have never been a fan of Castrol, but hey live and learn something new everyday...

Thoughts?

I will pick Mobil super over castrol gtx anyday.. I also recommend to get better oil filter. oil filter play major role.

I will never use synthetic oil unless it is required by manufactured...

Mobil Super which I currently use. I was a GTX/Syntec guy for 25 years until I found BITOG. Castrol has great advertising and sponsoring John Force is the best thing Castrol ever did.

I used many different brand names, including Castrol GTX and Syntec, because of sale price and with rebate(s). There isn't much difference between one brand name conventional oil to another, as long as you do reasonable OCI and to me it is about 6-7k miles or 6 months for non-severe conditions.

Use the Castrol with confidence. We used nothing but Castrol GTX 5w30 in our Mercury Grand Marquis for over 200,000 miles and never had any oil related problems from the engine. I remember looking in the oil fill hole at around 250,000 miles and it was as clean as a whistle! Very little varnish and NO sludge. I haven't used the Mobil Super, but I am very happy with the regular Mobil 1 lineup. I am sure Mobil's Super line is a great oil too.

In a way it's similar to Valvoline except(I remember from PQIA comparative oil analysis) Castrol appears to use a very high class base oil blend. In the 5w-20 used oil analysis viscosity didn't shear at all.

IMO....I'd also go with the GTX.

Mobil Super Conventional, Valvoline and GTX all have the sodium fortified add packs, if that is what you are looking to use. If you would rather than the traditional add packs like Pennzoil, QS, Formula Shell, Kendall Synthetic Blend, Peak, SuperTech.....and so on....you have other choices to select for your application.

I didn't have any problem using mobil clean. The engine is quiet like a cat whether I use mobil or chevron supreme.. mpg is same..

I decided to buy only 10qt mobil. I will wait for chevron supreme at costco with $9 coupon.. I think costco will have coupon around June...

I would use whatever is cheaper, but personally I would lean towards Mobil. I have used both but have not touched a Castrol product in well over 10 years. Not saying they are bad, I just like other brands better.

I like GTX tri-shield for my Maxima. Now I am using PU to clean out some of the golden coating in my VQ3.0. I don't know what oil previous used. Through the filling hole, I can see a gold brown vanish so after one cycle of GTX Auto-RX and Kendal clean, I am using PU + 1/4 of MoS2 to clean the engine a bit.

LOL....that is why I said GTX. I've got quite a few gallons from the Kmart Clearance Sale Extravaganza. I'll be using it soon enough in some happy vehicles.

In part that was one of the reasons that I posted the question (and sometimes the bashing is not quantified in any manner), but (and I should have added this to my original post) is it worth twice as much as Mobil Super?
