02 Kia Sportage 98k using oil - uses about 1/2 quart every 2500. The suv sat for a long period of time. Last OCI Maxlife 5w30 and still using oil. I can't see any external leaks. I want to try either Mobil Super HM or Castrol High Mileage and plan on bumping it up to 10w30. Which one should I go with?

Maybe a kerosene or "your choice of chemical" piston soak to make sure the rings are free before going to more viscous oils. The Engine shouldnt have worn out of service bores at this mileage.

Are those the only brands you are considering? QS DEFY is a great oil for and it helps your engine. I domt have the.full specs on why defy is a good oil but if you go to QuakerState.com it has all the information you need. Personally ive used Mobil 1 High Mileage in full synthetic and didnt seeany difference.it regards to performance. I never used Castrol and probably never will

I'd try Castrol 5w30 HM. It's already thicker than Mobil High Mileage and Maxlife HM of the same grade with 11 kinematic visc at 100c and probably 3.3 cP HTHS.

I think the piston soak is a good idea. ^^

A quart every 5k miles? Hardly enough to bother doing a piston soak.

Give Maxlife a couple more OCIs before you switch; some brands of oil need a few OCIs to stabilize and start working their magic. Otherwise I'd use whichever one was on sale that month - most of the high mileage oils out there are quite good.

It might, at first anyway. But ultimately I'd expect it to settle down.

The "old" Castrol is plenty thick and should still be readily available, high volume places like Wally's may no longer have much of it though.

I'd think Defy a prime candidate for a 10w30 as it's a good part group III blend and also has a fairly high VI for a 10w30, 146 I think. The "old" Castrol 5w30 would be about the same thickness though but with a VI of 151.

Did you check your PCV valve and are you using OEM oil filters? You also want to top it up every 1k miles. Don't wait till its low already. Reduced my oil consumption this way.
