My engine consumes regular Mobil 1 5W30 at a decent pace, so I am wondering if going to Mobil 1 Advanced Fuel Economy 0w30 or 5W30 EP would decrease the consumption. I was going to go Ultra Platinum 5W30, but a few people on here have said that PUP will consume more oil than Mobil 1, so I may not run the PUP after all.
Look at the numbers for afe and EP and compare them. The differences are nominal until -40ish,so switching won't have any effect on consumption.
Switching brands may help. However some engines consume oil when brands are changed for a while so you may have to hurry up and wait before seeing any improvements.
How much consumtion is being referred to here. If it's under the accepted quart per 1000 miles it's a non issue.
Low tension rings mean that most engines at start up are allowing oil to get past the rings. Once everything achieves operating temp the rings are tighter in the bores so the consumption stops at that point.
Depending on how many cold starts the engine experiences daily this could become a substantial loss of oil,and might be considered bad but the reality of it is that everything is fine.
Deposits on the ring lands can cause consumtion. 4000rpm for 10 minutes on the highway,and a few full throttle blasts will go a long way towards sending them out the exhaust valves.
Ever since low tension rings became standard the oil consumtion threshold went up. But so did fuel economy as well as engine longevity.
It's been a very long time since I've seen bores that had the machining worn right off and the bores significantly tapered. But growing up I can remember seeing engines with 50k without the crosshatching anymore.
My uncle was a journeyman mechanic,heavy duty diesel and a farmer so the experience went very far maintaining equipment.
As a boy he explained that cylinder bores absolutely have to have those cross hatching marks in order to hold oil for the rings to glide on. Without them the lubricant will just fall to the bottom of the bore,lubricating nothing.
So as these marks wear off they actually accelerate the wear process because as the cross hatching wears away less oil can be held and less oil means more wear,til failure.
I've seen ford mod motors with 300k on the odo and cylinder bores still had cross hatching. That was unheard of 30 years ago.
So now that we've established that during warm up oil gets past the rings til the metals expand as they warm how much oil are you referring to. if it's under the oem threshold it's a non issue anyway.
Try a different grade. If you don't want to try that try a different brand.
A can of motor oil saver might do the trick too.
