I purchased my 1st set of oil/filter for my truck today. I settled on Mobil Drive Clean 5w30 (with the GF-4 cert on the back) and a purolator L10241 filter. The only other GF-4 oil I could find in my area was Castrol and it was $1.88/quart whereas the Mobil was $1.35/quart. Is there any significant difference between Mobil Drive Clean and Castrol if they're both meet the GF-4 standard?

Castrol's GTX dino has shown to be a good oil for achieving longer OCI's. Personally, I wouldn't push MDC too far. But, for a 3000 mile OCI, there's little difference between the two.
ILSAC GF-4 is a significant improvement over GF-3. I think we are going to see less of a difference between the performance of name brand oils than we have in the past. I would have bought the cheaper of the two oils also. If you want significantly better performance then get a synthetic oil.

oilguy3, next time, if available at discount chains in your area, check out any of the four entry level ConocoPhillips made oils - 76, Conoco, Kendall, or Phillips in the 5w30 viscosity range. These have been recently reformulated to synthetic blend status and state so on the front labels. Syn-blend, GF-4, and at conventional oil pricing. (and, no, I do NOT work for ConocoPhillips Petroleum or any of its subsidiaries or distributors
)
There was an article in this month's "Lubes and Greases" that discussed ConocoPhillip's GF-4 oils. There oils (Kendall, TropArtic, 76Super, and Conoco) are now using a "SyntheticBlend which will allow the GF-4 specs. The article indicated that other brands are probably going to follow this pattern.
Opinions on the Mobil Drive Clean might change now .
I just saw the first GF-4 5w30 and on the label it meets Fords new for 2005 WSS-M2C929-A 5w30 spec which is the same tough 5w-20 TEOST limit yet in a 30wt viscosity and is still $ 1.17 at Walmarts .
In addition, VG follower pin and ring wear limits and the 30 mg TEOST limit are specified over and above ISLAC GF-4

I don't think that any of us here have any basis to comment on the relative superiority of Mobil Drive Clean, Castrol GTX, Motorcraft, etc. etc. etc. in their new GF-4 forumulation because we really don't know how much has changed. Perhaps some of these oils went through major reformulations to meet GF-4 specs and some others may have required little or no change from the GF-3 generation.
In my view, all previous data and biases are pretty much worthless now until we get a body information on the new stuff.
I would also speculate that within manufacturers we are going to see even less actual differentiation between formulations of their various labels then we have in the past. ConocoPhilips, for example, has all but stated that their Kendall, 76, Conoco and Phillips 66 brands are all the same stuff with different labels.

Thanks for all the replys. I guess what I should have asked is in their previous GF-3 configurations is there a big difference between MDC and Castrol GTX? Maybe another way of phrasing the questions would have been "of all the cheap dino GF-3 oils which do you use"? I figure, if they made a good GF-3 they'll probably make a good GF-4.
I just bought a case (12 bottles) of this from wal mart for $1.05/qt.
Might ba a while before I get to see how it works though.
