VW 506.01 is ONLY for PD engines with flexible oil service display, which is, to my best knowledge, NOT (yet) available in the NA market. In the NA market, stick with VW 505.01 oil.

I do not believe that what makes the VW 505.01 oil so special has to do with minimizing wear in the P/D/valve unit (HTHS isn't THAT high), but also has to do with sulfated ash limits. I have no proof, but I strongly suspect that VW 505.01 oil has a sulfated ash limit of way under the common 1.5% limit.

If anyone has a PDF or other file showing the specs of VW 505.01, please post them here. I already have the specs for most other VW oil specs, and I'd like to confirm my suspicion.

For a 2004 PD TDI the actually specification to meet is the VW 505.01 . Mobil 1 5w40 aka Mobil 1 5w40 does NOT meet that specification.

This might be like cursing in church, BUT in my estimation the above oil will work just fine! It is one of the highest quality oils!! (strapping on flame suit and ejector seat)

However, in the VERY remote case that you need engine warranty work, the first thing they will do is to do an oil analysis (VW505.01) has a slightly different chemical signature. VW is notorious for first procedural denial of warranty.

How can I say this? There is not a day that goes by that some VW DEALER, i.e., one that should KNOW BETTER (or the ones we hear of on other VW boards) puts in the WRONG specification oil in a PD! Yet, there is NO rash of warranty engine work as the PD owners manual says is absolutely imenient!! .

So be that as it may, if I were a PD owner, I would use the VW 505.01 specification oil. Right now that comes done to two commonly available oils 1. German Castrol 5w40, VW 505.01 or as some folks on this board and or others refer to it GC. 2. Motul 5w40, VW 505.01

There are others such as ELF, Bardahl, etc, but they are more needle in the haystack and require a bit more research.

Actually the European version of Mobil 1 5w40, aka Mobil 1 syn S IS VW 505.01 compliant.

I am guessing one of the major reasons why it is not sold/distributed here is: in Europe per liter/qt is 10 US per qt vs 4/5 US per qt in the USA
