I see that Mobil has their version of the fully synthetic CJ-4/SM out now. Product specifications found here .

Does anyone have any experience with this? If I recall, the regular Mobil Delvac did not have any moly (Chevron Delo does, but Mobil and Shell did not). Does anyone know if for the new CJ-4/SM formulation Mobil added any moly?

I am hopeful this suggests that Shell will quickly have their synthetic CJ-4/SM Rotella on the market.

did you mean to say, "i would *NOT* worry about it." ?

had to use "=" to get the spacing right for the "^"

Yeah, I wondered about that missing "not" in that sentence.

I'm sure the Delvac 5W-40 CJ-4 is good stuff.

Okay, someone talk me down off the ledge. I took my Wing into the dealership for its 12K mile service. I declined the oil change because ... well, I do that. But I asked, "What kind of oil do you put in?" He said in winter it's Honda GN-4 10W-40; in summer in Tucson they put Honda GN-4 20W-50. (They used to put Bel-Ray 20W-50 into everything, year round.)

So now I'm wondering ... given the brutal Tucson summer heat, should I worry about an HDEO 15w40 in a water cooled bike? Should I be considering a synthetic? A 20W-50 even though in theory the '07 Wing calls for a 10W-30 oil?

C'mon Sunruh ... remind me again about SuperTech at $7/gallon ... please, before I drop $40 on some boutique motorcycle oil.

Don, you NEED the $40 per quart oil. your stealership will go out of business if you dont pay their 8x inflated prices on low bid contract products.
do your part for the economy and pony up the bucks.

i tested the mobil 1 delvac 1300 15w40 cj-4 at the caprock canyon enduro (3.4 motor hours) and it stayed in grade. but Supertech whipped its butt! 69.8 vs 75.0
the 1300 also had 41 moly in it.

yeah, you guys in tucson get some insane temps.

Sunruh, do you do your own post-race testing for viscosity? Or do you do a used oil analysis with Blackstone or whomever after each race?

Yeah, I had a sense it was my patriotic duty to feather the pockets of those motorcycle oil producers. [censored], it's the least I can do given I've *not* spent so much with them the last few changes.

i've used blackstone for almost all of the 40+ oa's. i used southwest instituted a few times (also sent to blkstn at same time) and i don't know who i will use for the test i got going right now.

Don,STEP AWAY FROM THE DEALERSHIP. DO IT NOW!!!!Watch the temperature gauge on your wing. That should tell you everything you need to know.If you're riding in 110 degree temperatures then it's YOU that need service - not the bike.15w40 is perfectly fine in a water-cooled motorcycle. Listen - I have friends that run Rotella 15w40 in their Harleys and have excellent results. Note that the chart on page 155 of my Gold Wing Owner's manual shows 10w30 10w40 from minus 20F to +120F.I think you're covered with something-w-40.Shell sent me a viscosity chart graph thingy comparison on several of their oils. The 15w40 is good for just about anything. OK, @ 30F then the 5w40 might be better. Do you ride when it's that cold?

No sir! My limit is 40F, and even that I'd prefer to avoid. I've found it becomes acceptable to enjoyable above 46F. For me, the perfect riding temperature seems to be 65F.

Sadly, in Tucson in the summer the days don't see 65F. They dawn at something like 80F and go up from there. It's pretty brutal riding at 110F.

Well think about this for a minute. Honda recommends 10w30 in my Gold Wing and then recommends an 8,000 mile oil change interval. I don't know about you, but I wouldn't DREAM of running GN4 for 8,000 miles, much less that it's the 10w30 variety. But, Honda gives a three year (UNLIMITED mileage) warranty based on THEIR recommended change interval.

And yes, the average daily temperature is much higher in Arizona but you have two radiators (count them) and a thermostat to regulate the engine temperature.

So what about all those cars that are running 5w20 out there in Arizona land? Are they melting down just yet?

Oil has to do two things. 1. Lubricate..... 2. Dissipate heat. Better oil flow means better heat disipation.

Air-cooled bike = xx-w-50
Water-cooled bike = xx-W-40

Say it.
