I hardly ever see any commentary here on Mobil's Drive Clean 5000. Dragged by Miss Linda into Mall-Wart yesterday, I hit the oil aisle and spotted 5-gal. jugs of 5w30 and 10w30 priced at $8.97. Hard to beat, right?

My next oil change is coming up in about a month, the first fill after an Auto-Rx rinse phase. I'm planning on doing 6 months, including the viciously hot Loozyana summer, about ~4500 miles. DC 5w30's cSt at 100 C. is 10.5, and I was thinking to use Havoline DS (cSt of 9.7) to help eke out a hair more fuel efficiency. But this DC price is hard to top.

Is there any reason not to go with DC? How come we don't see the love for it here as we do for PP, and used to for GC, Havoline, and Trop Artic?

Good oil.

I personally think for the $$ the best value from Mobil.

The only thing I do not like is the sodium in it which will mess up the UOA.. (Castrol is following suit with some of their weights of GTX)

I'd use it for 5k oci or follow the OLM.

A month or two ago when it was with the oil change special at autozone it got plenty of love. Lots of people stocked up, including myself. The reason is probably that it usually isnt a "bargain" oil Havoline/Trop or a "surprise" oil like GC/PP.

I noticed that M1 5000 at Wally World the other day.
I almost bought it but got the Motorcraft , instead.
Maybe I should have snapped it up.

My guess is that at 5-6k interval, wear and overall performance is probally as good as oil costing twice as much.

The Mobil 5000/7500 are great values IMO.

I understand the Na issue with analysis labs, which can be annoying, but this oil has a good detergent system and deposit control for conventional oils.

Thats what we all did. Basically $1.25 a quart if you say the filter was worth $2.75.

Care to show proof of that.

well mobil says the oil is good for 5000 miles, for relatively normal use.
looks like a good value, particularly at a discount.

if it is that important to you, do your own testing.

the man said guess and probably.
he makes a reasonable statement.
retire to your lab and debunk him if it floats your boat

Oops. I just recalculated how much I drive per month, and 6 months means more like 5500 miles. Anybody think the extra 10 % of mileage will be a problem, or is this a "5K - 6K" sort of oil?

The oil is good for 6 months, 5000 miles or WHATEVER the OLM indicates.

I'd not worry about it. If ALL of your trips are short, then I'd be more concerned, but 5-6k in 6 months is not a 1-3 mile per trip use... (correct me if I'm wrong)

Again, a UOA is your best friend here. It would tell you how its performing and save you $$ in the long run.

If more people used their brains and did this, they would have much longer life with less problems and SAVE $$.

Take care, bill

Mobil Clean 5000 has 16% more detergents vs their former GF-4 Drive Clean oil now only available in bulk at quick lubes.

Hi, Bill,

Yes, my Buick sees an 18-mile round trip to work, 30 min. each way on average, so I'm moving steadily. The other ~500 miles a month is totalled up on weekends, mostly errands. I've given up on pleasure driving for the most part -- due to the cost of gas, but also because there's no place worth driving to around here.

Yeah, gas is up to $3.10 here from $2.82 Monday.

Diesel is $3.69.

$4 for reg unleaded this summer with out a sweat. I'll bet its even over that.

Take care, bill
