Here's my UOA.

I submitted this sample because of a previous concern of running the engine on low oil..

previous post

With the low level of silicon, looks like the engine is well broken in.

Car had 11,749 miles on it. OCI was 4228 miles. Oil was in car for 4.5 months. 1 QT of make-up oil. Ran with M-108 Filter. I now have changed to the larger M-110 filter.

Comments are welcome. Thanks to Chinee and all of you for your insight...

Oil analysis looks good

The history of my car:

-Stayed under 4k RPM for first 1200 miles
-Changed to Mobil 5W-30 SS at 3835 miles with new OEM oil filter
-Changed oil again with Mobil 5W-30 SS at 7421 miles with M-108 filter. Note that I was concerned after this oil change because I only drained out 3.5 qts of oil
-Between 7,421 and 11,749 miles, I had to add a total of 1 QT of make-up oil to keep within H/L marking. 4.5 months between oil change.

At the 11,749 oil changed, I changed to a M-110 filter. I will continue to monitor my oil level, but will extend my OCI to the recommended 5500 mile mark.

Hope this info helps someone...

5K? You could go a LOT further than 5K with this combination. I'd look at 8 to 10K, and not even worry about it. Man, I sure had to see P and Zn levels heading south as M1 gears up for the new SM oils. But, at least they are cranking up the calcium and boron. I would keep an eye out for the Fe and Cu, just for grins.

1 qt. in 4,200+ miles isn't out of line. Most carmakers won't even look at an engine as a warranty claim unless oil consumption exceeds 1 qt./1,000 miles. Also keep in mind drsifu's been using Mobil 1 SS since the first oil change from the factory fill. Not what I would personally use in a motor still breaking-in since that oil's superb low friction and antiwear properties would logically extend the time to seat the piston rings to their cylinders. He should see his oil consumption decrease now.

It would appear that VQs love the taste of Mobil1... mine has, and continues to consume 1/2 qt per 3k miles or so. My lead wear is low at 4K but rises to double digits at 7.5K; the only positive is that it has shown a downwards trend over the last 20K miles. Hopefully my next UOA will support this trend.

Nice report.

I have the VQ in a 350Z, I'm waiting till 10K miles before going to Mobil 1. I've read on a couple of sites (Maxma and 350Z sites) that they recommend 10K miles before going to synthetic for the VQ engine. I changed my oil at 1200 miles, 4000 miles, and will change again at 7000 with dino. My VQ has so far used no more than a fraction below the full line on the dip stick in one of my OCI's ( I know not very long 1200 and 2800 so far ) I wonder if some of this oil useage these VQ's are seeing, is because of too early of a change to synthetic?

I wonder too, but if that's the reason for the oil consumption, what effect does the synth oil have on the engine that causes this?

from a g35 forum i look at there is a guy consuming 1 qt every 1000 miles on his infiniti g35 (low miles).

the engine in the g35 holds 5 qts, so 1 qt every 1K is sure a lot of oil to consume. isn't that like 60% oil loss in a "normal" 3K oil change interval?

in his case he is using royal purple and hopes going to mobil 1 will "fix" the problem!

Guys, it’s been discussed here before and most of us no longer believe that you must break-in your car on mineral oil before going to synthetic. There’s just not that much difference between the two (in their current forms) when it comes to preventing wear during modest oil drain intervals.

Try searching using the phrase “break in” in the main “Car and truck Gas Engine” subsection to find lots of discussion.

What I do think is important is to change the oil out at least 3 times before you hit the 10,000 mile mark, maybe even 4. For that reason alone I wouldn’t use synthetic ... but you could if you had money to waste.

Some engines like to really drink Mobil 1. Others don’t consume a drop no matter how hard they’re driven (like my Honda Civic). The stuff is formulated to be on the thin side, so that’s gotta be a factor. It also probably has to do with the ring pack design ... but I’m getting outta my league at this point.

Anyway, these results look fine. Not one for the record books but your new ride is doin’ OK, drsifu.

Yeah - check all the UOAs that Mazda 6 owners (with the V6 and the I4) have posted here, as well as on mazda6tech.com.

Almost all of us switched to Mobil 1 very early (0W20 to match the factory recommended 5W20) and have seen great running-in wear numbers, with steady decreases between OCIs.

I tend to agree with the observation that it is no longer necessary to change to synthetic only after running-in, although, of course, the quicker intervals early in an engine's life would cost a lot more to adhere to with synthetic!
