the old generation mechanics used to say when you drain you engine oil you could stick you thumb and finger in oil and then see how far could pull your finger away from your thumb before the oil separates should be able to to get 1/8 to 1/4 inch before oil breaks. does the still hold true for synthetic oils

Never heard of this. There's enough regulation and certification around oil that we can use real objective tests to determine film strength and such.
 
im glad someone posted this topic, i do this myself, not sure where i got it from, i remember driving a 22 ton articulated contruction truck in england....badly abused and poorly maintained....i pulled the dipstick to see some extremely deep black oil that almost ran off the stick....between my thumb and finger it had zero film strength, was like water....does it REALLY mean anything.....I dunno!?
