This kind of went unnoticed but I thought it was interesting.

For GF-4, 35 mg is the max. For GF-5 it's been lowered to 30 mg.

Notice how far below the limit Mobil 1 is. This is why Honda chose Mobil 1 for their turbo.

For what it's worth, OilGuy a few years back said Syntec scored around 26 mg in this test.

Also notice that 0w base oils won't do as well in this test.
 
Can you explain this in terms I'll understand, as I am not familure with this test. Also I did not notice M1 listed in the link you provided. Please explain. Thanks
 
Leading Commercial Synthetic is Mobil 1 5w30. TEOST test measures deposits. Lower number the better. Max. allowed for GF-4 is 35 mg. Mobil 1 was around 5-6 mg. For GF-5 the Max allowed is 30 mg.

Thanks for explaining this. I didn't see the Mobil 1 acknowledgement, but I knew Mobil 1 5w30 is very good for deposit control. As you said the Honda HTO-06 and Corvettr 4718 spec require this.
 
Yes. It's why a lot of high performance engine builders like Mobil 1. Keeping the rings deposit free under high heat/racing conditions is crucial. Gardella Racing uses off the shelf Mobil 1 5w30.

That's one reason many make the mistake of chosing an oil strickly by a used oil analysis. I understand used oil analysis are not meant for that purpose as it leaves out other important info. Per Doug Hillary.

I believe Jason Witfield does as well.
 
Just watch the Pennzoil Ultra video above on this page about how important it is in keeping the piston rings clean and free of deposits.
 
Yes, Many engines have been overhauled simply because of coked rings causing oil blow by. A friend tore his Escort engine down because of oil use and found the rings completly blocked with carbon. The cylinder bores were not that bad, but a tear down was required non the less.

Exactly. You want to learn as much as you can. used oil analysis factor in some for me, but I also want to see specs, approvals, and as much real world experience form users as I can find.

I was hoping oxidation or something else might be elevated after deposits were formed that would indicate it
