Do you guys think switching to Mobil-1 Synthetic atf fluid would be a good idea for my 2005 RX? or just stay with the Toyota fluid? btw,60,000 miles and no issues with trans.(so far anyway)

Im going to assume you are needing a T-IV spec fluid? If so I would avoid the new Mobil 1 ATF. I have seen several guys who have not liked it in Toyotas. I have had great luck with Redline D4 in my 2006 camry SE which calls for T-IV. Shifts much better than the factory juice. Mine has about 15K on it thus far, no issues.

If you dont want to spend that much or odering is an issue I would just go with Valvoline Maxlife. It meets the spec. I have personally used it in a 2004 Tundra and liked it. Its also a synthetic which T-IV is not. All in all I pretty much have a great dislike of T-IV. Its in the same league as Z1.

My 4speed auto is completely different than yours, but it called for T-IV, I changed it at 40,000 miles, and ever since I had it (even before that cange) it had an occasional studder in the 1->2 shift. At 60,000 I changed over to M1 (new recommended for T-IV formula) and still had it once or twice, but not since about 100 miles in. So, in my experience it did better than T-IV in a Toyota tranny that called for T-IV.

I guess yes, but really you probably won't notice a big difference. The specs are very similar. I'll probably stick with M1 from here out.

well,i still need to drop the pan and clean the magnets etc.so if it looks pretty decent in their, then the toyota fluid might be alright for this trans.it hasnt been changed from the factory fill(before i purchased it)@ 59,000 miles.i have changed the fluid twice now in 1,000 miles.

I think that M1 ATF, or any other full synthetic, would be an excellent idea for your transmission.

Thanx,I do too.I guess I need to stock up on fluid! I wonder what the above poster(sorry I cant see who from this screen)meant by people switching to the new MB-1 formula were disapointed in the results??

That was me. I have had several friends here in phoenix who have switched to the new Mobil 1 ATF and have gone back to T-IV because of extended shifts and shudder in newer toyotas. Recently we had a member who commmented on this in a 2005 camry if im not mistaken.

Mobil 1 ATF is a fine product. It works well in some applications. From my experience with it, there are much better offerings out there. It sounds like you pretty much already were set on using it and just needed some reassurance.

Yeah you pretty much nailed it! But as I stated above,if the trans pan isnt full of shrapnel in their, then the Toyota fluid did its job.

Ha. Yeah I think if you are vigilant about changing T-IV you will most likely never have a problem. When extended OCI's come into the picture though, you really start to see its shortcomings.

At any rate, let us know what you decide!

It might be a good idea to replace the magnets vs cleaning them.!!

BTW, I have good luck with T-IV on my highlander. Dont know if it is becoz of yearly drain/fill with T-IV.

IMO, the highlander tranny really sucks with hesitation and trying another soup may make an already cranky tranny shift worse.

I dont think any of these metric trannies are any [censored] good to be honest with you.You just have lesser of the evils is all.

I traded my 2004 RX330 in with almost 160,000 miles and the trans was shifting like new. T-IV fluid exchanges every 40-50k. I was able to get T-IV for about $5/qt by the case at local dealers. So, I would stick with the factory recommended fluid. BTW, never dropped the pan as the dealer advised against it if the trans was shifting well. Also, 4 drain fills gets you to over 85% new fluid.

Glad to hear that! The only thing I dont like about this tranny is it shifts firm when cool, and when at operating temp it does that typical Lexus slide into the next gear stuff.
