Called Mobil and was told their oils will be upgraded to GF-5/SN in this Spring. Same with Amsoil.

Curious to see them tested on PQIA. Wonder if the Conventional will show a lower volatility - the MC5K is one of the best in this regard now for a 5w30.

With M1 and Amsoil do you think the formulation will change, or is this just a change on the bottle labeling?

here i thought i did good stocking up 24 quarts on black friday of 0w40...

will there really be any difference? any to really matter? My car ran on SM it's whole entire life (6 yrs). what's another 5 years?

What do you mean "same as Amsoil" They are already SN (at least their XL and OE). XL is also DEXOS1 Approved. I have a feeling the new color M1 bottles and Jugs are SN already but I have no way of backing that up, it just looks as if the formulations have changed ie. lower ZDDP, added Boron.

Advance Discount Auto had that "unadvertised Sale" on the M1 EP and others a month or 2 ago. $3.99 a quart....Great Deal!...after you put it in your cart.....online only.

Maybe there will be a repeat performance of that online special if they need to reduce inventory for this quarter. They must have really added to their bottom line, at year end, after that special.

Not for their top tie line. Maybe Pablo knows...

Mobil 1 SM GF-4 lists Dexos approval on their website.

"Mobil 1 5w30 is now an officially dexos1™ licensed product, passing the dexos1™ specification, and has been approved for use in GM vehicles."

Can you meet the Dexos spec without exceeding SN GF-5?

I don't know, but my guess is that M1 oils have met the GF-5 and SN spec for some time.

I bought some Mobil 1 5w30 for a 2011 Chevy Traverse. It does NOT say dexos1 on it anywhere - it is still SM. Do you guess then that this oil is still fine to use in the Traverse? Are there any other alternatives?

The newer M1 5-30 does say Dexos 1. You may have picked up bottles before the Dexos 1 was printed on them. No fear, it will work well for you.

Well if the "Standard of the World" is not good enough in its current state, how good was it really in SM incarnation? Should be fine, Me, I'd run Chartreuse cap in the EoM line as the betterer stuff.

Pennzoil Platinum GF-5/SN is already available:

It satisfies dexos1 (even though the bottle doesn't say so). But then I expect virtually all GF-5 synthetic oils to satisfy GF-5. In fact even the GF-4 Mobil 1 satisfies dexos1. The main difference between dexos1 and GF-5 is the lower volatility (13% vs. 15% limit) and hence most dexos1 oils, if not all, should be synthetic.

I am currently using this oil in my car. It seems to be a better quality oil than Mobil 1 and Pennzoil is certainly the favorite oil on this forum.

Thanks Jehartley. First time seeing them packaged like that. Havent seen them on the West Coast yet.

No, problem. I picked up a jug for the same price Walmart always carrys it for: $25.00. The quart, however, did go up in price. It was $7.50, I believe. I know Mobil said they didn't have to change the formulation to meet dexos, but they must have had to change it to meet GF-5, because it smells different. I had one quart of the old stuff in my garage, and it smells very "sweet" to me. The new stuff smells a lot like Amsoil. Go figure.
