Put Mobil 1 High Mileage 10w40 into my 91 BMW 318i about 1000 miles ago. Had been using rotella syn 5w-40 and did a run on schaeffer's 5w-40. Did a few OCIs on delvac 15w40 this summer.

On the rotella, all was well. But after a time I was getting a tick at startup. It didnt go away with other oils, or back to rotella.

It seems to have gone away with the 10w-40 HM. I almost feel that the engine wants a slightly heavier oil at startup!

The interesting thing though? 1 qt consumed in about 1000 miles!

Im not concerned. I dont see any leaks, any smoke, and consumption often occurs during changeovers of different oil types. I had noticed no consumption on the delvac (though they were short OCIs, one with Kreen, and even after that the start tick didnt go away). Prior to that Id say it was maybe 1 qt every 3000 miles on RTS and Schaeffers. For the last 15-20k miles, the car has mainly seen highway cruising at 3100 RPM or so.

So Ill be monitoring and trying to track this so others can understand what happens. The car has 135k, BTW.

So here's where we are at:

0 miles Initial Fill
1000 miles 1 qt consumed (1qt added)

Not bad. 1 quart in 1000 miles isn't a big deal if you're switching formulations, IMO. Not sure how long this will stay in, but are you planning on a 0wX for the winter?

Why would switching formulations cause a temporary increase in consumption, which seems to be what you're implying?

I wonder if swapping from an HDEO oil over to a PCMO has shocked the engine, generating blow-by initially from the change? Isn't M1 considered exceptional at keeping ring packs clean?

I'd be concerned if consumption remained this high.

Not sure Id want to run an API CF oil in a diesel, but that's just me and my MB diesels. YMMV.

Ive seen this in MB diesels for years. Folks who ran either a 20w-50 PCMO or 15w40 HDEO, going to M1 or whatnot, and seeing consumption that slowly goes away.

I'm keeping this in. According to my BMW manual, 10w-40 is good from -20 to 60F. 15w40 is good from 0 to 85F. But these are 1991 era conventional oils. Ive had no issues running syn 40wt oils under all conditions. Given that the 10w-40 High Mileage is ACEA A3, I see no reason why it shouldnt be robust enough to be acceptable. BMW shows "special oils" good for more or less the entire temperature band.

IMO it is just a changeover phenomena. IMO the oil has browned quite a bit over just 1000 miles.

For all I know I have leaky valve seats or something. We will see.

It's ACEA A3/B3, A3/B4

I know, but that does not mean that B3/B4 is more technically advanced than say, CJ-4.

According to the comparison tool (need to open one for passenger, one for HD):

http://www.lubrizol.com/EuropeanEngineOils/RelativePerformanceToolIntro.html

It looks like CJ-4 is more complete and equally or more stringent.

But the results are normalized so its tough to know for sure.

Agreed CJ-4 is a tougher spec, but I don't have a truck. VW says ACEA B3 or B4 is permissible. Most other Euro manufacturers say the same thing for older engines? (ACEA A3, B3, B4)

I know. But Im using the best diesel spec that I can for my MB diesels... And that pushes me towards the API spec versus ACEA.

My 30 yo diesels have EGR, so the API specs are relevant even for that. Not sure if the ACEA ones are.

If youre getting good performance and life, Ill stand to guess that it does not make much of a difference...

2nd qt added. Down to the fill line.

2 qts in 1800 miles... All high speed highway driving - 3400ish RPM.

Tried to experiment by never coasting in gear, thereby minimizing the high vacuum situations where oil may get pulled into the cylinders.

Didn't change a thing.

Keep in mind I ran kreen in delvac 1300 before this... So I'm guessing valve seals? Hopefully the High Mileage oil will swell them up a bit...

3400 revs isn't all that fast in a 318, given the short gearing.
At that tach reading, mine is a little under 75 mph.
Anyway, could this engine simply need a heavier oil?
I ran mine on Mobil 1 15W-50 EP from late June to late September, and saw consumption of a little under 2K/qt in 6K miles of use.
On the Maxlife now in it, it used a quart in a little over 1300 miles.
Although it seems awfully thick, the Mobil 1 was the most satisfactory oil I've used in the car.
Fuel economy averaged >30 mpg over the 6K OCI, also.

Ive historically run 40wt oils without issue.

Might the need to go up a grade be the case? Perhaps. But Im thinking it is something related to age/wear.

Is that maxlife A3 rated? If not this M1 may be more robust than the maxlife, with the 15w-50 stouter than either.

I honestly feel that Mobil`s Mobil 1 High Mileage oils are the best of the best! I`ve been using it for the past few oci`s and will continue to use it. I sent off a sample to Blackstone yesterday. Looking forward to comparing it to the RP one I did awhile back.

Me too on mine, though at 1st per kmile, at a 5k OCI I'll have replaced the sump.

According to Valvoline, either Maxlife or Durablend meet A3 in the 10W-40 grade.
Durablend is no longer offered as a 10W-40 in this country, while the A3 claim is no longer on their PDS for Maxlife SB 10W-40.
I went out to the garage and checked the labels, and both Valvoline products claim to meet A3.
My 318 has about 123K on it at the moment.
I suspected that Mobil 1 High Mileage 10w40 must be at least as thick as Maxlife 10W-40, so I checked the respective PDSs.
According to the M1 PDS, Mobil 1 High Mileage 10w40 has HTHS of 3.9, with visc at 40C/100C of 14.71/95.9.
Maxlife 10W-40 has visc of 15/102 at the same temps, so it is thicker than the M1 and I was wrong in my assumption.
Valvoline does not give an HTHS figure for the oil, but if these two oils meet A3, HTHS must be =>3.5.

Ive ran T6 for a long time. Good oil for that car.

I ran Mobil 1 0w-40 once, maybe it was good, maybe bad. Have to look back at the UOA to see what we got.
