Mobil 1 filter problem?

I've always used Mobil 1 filters with no issues. I just recently bought a new Jeep Wrangler Rubicon (JK) with the 3.8 liter.

I was reading on the Jeep forums a rash of people complaining that when they went to a Mobil 1 filter that they experienced knocking on cold startup. People then swapped back to a Mopar filter or a Motorcraft filter and the problem goes away.

This isn't isolated as there seems to be a lot of people complaining about it.

Did something change in the Mobil 1 design, or is it something particular about this motor that makes it not like the Mobil 1 filters?

Can't answer your question, but I can say that I am using a M1 EP filter on my '00 VW 1.8T engine, and it's as quiet as a mouse on cold startup.

My VW is the only vehicle I've ever used M1 filters on, so I can't comment on how M1 filters perform on other engines.

Same here, have M1's filter's on evry one of my GM cars and all
are quiet, never noticed anything outa the ordinary, instant oil
pressure..

I've ben eading umpteen pages down on this forum. There seems to be some filters, even the higher quality such as WIX, Guard, M1, Purolator...and whatever that just are not compatable with some engines. My Toyota truck did not like Toyota filters. I used the AC Delco cross reference filter, a huge filter, and it worked great.

Virtually all filter designs work in the same way at managing anti-drain back properties of any filter. It's not likely that any one filter offering would offer any disadvantage over another.

Now where this can make a difference is if the engine has some peculiarity or the owners are engaging in some like activity that brings this to a head with those filters.

For example, you'll see a whole bunch of people speculating that they want filters with "better flow" ..even when the tightest, most dinky, filter can pass many more gallons of oil per minute than the engine can at max pressure. That is, in "most sensible views" ..this is just not a factor of merit.

HOWEVER, if you're running way thicker oil ..or are subjected to unusually cold temps ..AND your pump volume causes your pressure floor and ceiling to be too close together and you're in pump relief to some inordinate degree ....then a filter can make a difference up to the point of the bypass valve setting. Now if M1 bypass valve setting is higher than normal (Puro is 12-16 = relatively high compared to WIX)...blahblahblah..

So if you constructed a really narrow set of terms and conditions ..I suppose you could manage to actually have something.

You aslo can't discount the possibility that there's a run of bad ADBV's that passed OEM spec ..but didn't do the job that would normally be expected.

Just noticed this thread. I ran an M1 filter in my Honda V6 and it seemed a little rough on start up compared to the oem filter.
