Hey guys just curious what you think of my 2nd oil analysis for my 2011 WRX.

My first oil analysis is Mobil Clean 5000 and it sheared down in viscosity. Only ran ~2700 miles never ran hard and just used to bridge between OCI.

The second analysis is 3744 miles on the oil (Mobil 1 Extended Performance 5w30) and the car has a total of 7502 miles on the clock.

MI/HR on Oil 3744 2718

"The only questionable finding in this report was the slight increase in sodium. Since this oil doesn't
use sodium as an additive, it's possible that sodium is coming from a minor coolant leak. There's not enough
sodium to say for sure at this point, so for now it's just something to monitor. Wear metals are generally right
in line with what we saw last time. Iron did increase, though that is to be expected with a longer oil run and
iron at this level isn't concerning. The viscosity read normally for 5w30. Watch your coolant level; resample
in 4,500 miles to monitor."

Blackstone is a little concerned about coolant leak. What do you guys think with the given data? I do hope that my new car don't have a leak at 7500 miles already.

I don't know why there is Na in the sample. Report is ok. I hope the new SN formulation puts up better numbers.

Kinda doubt a coolant leak but it might be worth keeping an eye on.

And use Rotella T6 5w-40. Turbo Subarus should come with coupons for the stuff.

I think they messed up the report from when you used Mobil Clean, there is (was) a pretty good amount of sodium in that stuff. I agree with JRed, Rotella 5w40 is made for that engine. I would highly recommend you switch. Not a horrible UOA or anything just thinking you could probably get more for less $$.

The Mobil 1 Extended Performance also sheared to a 20 grade, but that's to be expected in a Subaru turbo. I would stick with synthetic since that's what Subaru recommends. I wouldn't be concerned about the sodium either. Yet.

Any chance you'll stick with Subaru's 7,500 mile OCI? Just curious. Looks like your break-in is happening pretty quickly.

Yeah thank you guys for all of the helpful information. I think the extra Sodium came from residual left over (bottom of oil pan) from the Mobil Clean 5000. I looked up VOA for both and they do look like they contain a lot of Sodium. I do expect to see about the same amount of Na on my next sample since I flushed the engine with a Mobil Super 5000 5w30 before filling with fresh Mobil 1 Extended Performance 5w30.

To Ottotheclown I'll definitely post my next sample on here probably at 12500 miles so stay tuned.

To Bluesubie, JRed, and Chubbs1 if the oil shears down to the lower limit of 30 weight specification then I'll be forced to look at a different oil. Probably Rotella 5w-40 (I'm assuming that this is full synthetic oil) since Subaru specified in the manual that 5w-40 weight may be used in "extreme driving conditions". Also seems to be a favorite in Subaru turbo boxer engines. I'm planning on sticking with the 7500 mile OCI when I see a trend in my used oil analysis that the oil wouldn't break down on my precious new engine.

I would run the severe service ocis per your manual. Looks like you could run 6 month ocis at about 3750 each. Save the uoa money until it's broken in at about 20,000. JMO

Why not go with regular Mobil 1 5w30? It's Honda HTO-06 rated for high temp deposite control in turbos.

Mobil 1 Extended Performance is also HTO-06 and supposed to be better than regular M1

So far I don't think there is any reason to favor severe oci over standard oci's based on the current UOA data.

(FZ1) I see your reasoning behind skipping used oil analysis and just spending the money on changing oil more often. I just want to keep a record of oil/engine health trends from the beginning of engine life.

(tig1) I chose Mobil 1 Extended Performance over regular M1 due to its new GF-5 formulation. I'm not sure if regular M1 is now also GF-5. I know one of the major changes between GF-4 and GF-5 is formulation changes to better help protect the turbo against wear and deposits.

HTO-06 is the high temp turbo spec(Mobil 1 5w30 has had that spec when it was GF4 and now GF5). OIl for Honda turbos requires HTO-06 for their turbo engines. Here is a link to Mobil 1 5w30.
