I have two BMWs, 2018 M550ix N63tu2 stage 1 tuned 570hp (requires LL-01FE, LL-04 or LL-01) and a 2001 BMW 540 M62TU stock (requires LL-01 or LL-04). I'm interested in all the discussions on cleaning ability of oils, so ESP is especially intriguing, since it doesn't carry the cost burden of HPLs wonderful products. I've been currently using QS Euro 5w-40 LL-01 or Pennzoil Euro L 5w-30 LL-04 the past several years, whichever is on sale or rebate at the time. (yeah I'm kinda cheap, but never experienced an oil related issue ever, though I do try to stack the odds in my favor by paying attention to approvals and change it in reasonable intervals (6k to 7.5k depending on the car).

The logical selection is the LL-04 approved 5w-30 variant. But both cars are long out of warranty, would there be any issues with using the 0w-40 variant (no BMW approvals) for the higher viscosity and HTHS? I'm not familiar with all the approval differences like edyvw...so please school me. Only issue is ESP 0w-40 isn't readily available in jugs, only quarts at a higher cost than the 5w-30 five quart jugs.

Stick with QS Euro 5W-40, at this time this oil is cheaper than Mobil 1 ESP 5W-30 and it is a better oil. Jump on this oil while it is cheap and before Quaker State either raises the price or cheapens the oil.

I personally would use the esp 5w-30 over the 0w-40 as the hths of 5-30 is 3.5 and the 0w-40 is a very thin one and usually falls to a 30 soon anyway.

I mean, if it is working, why change?
But, I get the itch (it is BITOG after all).
Both ESPs would work. in N63 TU2 I would absolutely go ESP 0W40 X4. In N63 always XW40.

Are you sure this applies to ESP 0w-40? Are you thinking of FS?
ESP seems more robust the FS in 0w-40.

Thank you, I was looking for your opinion...I called you out in the title, but the moderators edited it out. LOL.

Ha ha, I have bought QS Euro for $18 on fleabay and shipped from WalMart this year. It's $18.60 right now if you check listings...though the seller is "away" and won't ship until 7/18/25. Shady sellers, someone said they use stolen credit cards to pay for it, so their cost is zero. But you have no risk as eBay has many buyer protections. Unfortunately no ESP 0w-40 deals on eBay...have to buy from Amazon.

@edyvw why not the mobil 0-30 which has more esters meaning good cleaning abilities? its a robust oil from mobil too.

ESP 0W-40 would be the superior oil(very shear stable/ester for cleaning) over all the oils you’ve tried. ESP 0W-30 is easily available at Wally($27) with the same ester formula.

I believe having a BMW - the OP wants to use an oil that meets the BMW LL04 oil spec.
i know..but as edy has explained many times it doesnt matter if no long OCI is required, it has mb 229 approval.oxidation is the reason why it doesnt have bmw approval.so no worries.. the bait here is esters and their cleaning abilities and that is what the OP seeks for his oil.

Unlikely. These engines aren't picky so I would use whatever you for a daily driver. Remember you have oil coolers. Have you thought about installing a cooler T-stat for the oil cooler instead? That might be a simpler option.

No need to clean anything if regular OCI's were made, and they were in his case.
Also, ESP 0W40 X4 has a similar amount of esters as ESP 0W30:

Compared to ESP 0W30, he is getting bump in HTHS, which I would prefer if I had N63.
its what OP is interested to hear about most.

Out of warranty I see no reason to avoid it. It's not unreasonably thick, and is by all accounts an excellent lubricant.

I suggest using the Autozone filter bundle for 5x 1qt jugs with a filter, makes them pretty affordable.

@edyvw should start collecting consultation fees, lol. I have been direct messaging him about switching from LiquiMoly 4110 and Molygen to Mobil 0w40 x4, on my 4.5M SQ7, B5 S4 and my wife's 8V S3.

Also, I second @scrllock post about the Autozone sales. I purchased a few of those 5 quart with oil filter bundle for $38.99 / per bundle. You get 5 quarts of Mobil 0w40 x4 with an STP filter.
