That would depend on the level of saturates, the viscosity index and the sulfur level. There are equivalent Group III base stocks but it's just easier to get there with GTL.
Yeah ive got no idea. It seems like just basic group III. And IMO i view this as a downgrade. I dont see how its not considering the supply shortage is the only reason these reformulations are happening

That was kind of my point, if Mobil's primary line about it doesn't have anything to do with quality or performance and solely focuses on the product being intended to provide a reliable, stable supply I doubt there's anything special about it.
Most Mobil 1 5W-20 oils are not Dexos1Gen3 certified as is with Vanilla 5W-20 and also EP 5W-20. Now EP 0W-20 is also not Dexos and I know it was like 6 months ago. Mobil 1 Extended Performance
I'm sure it's been stated someplace here before, but it seems like the plausible theory is that they basically tweaked the EP formula to tip the scales towards more of a cleaning effect, renamed the amended formula Advanced Clean, and brought it out as a new sub-line to compete with Valvoline Restore and Protect.

Do you think they could have developed a new base oil in 2-3 months? (Once it was clear the strait wasn't going to open up any time soon.) I don't know—just a question for discussion. It would seem to me these types of products would take a long time to develop, but XOM has deep pockets and lots of smart people working for them...

I think they developed it a long time ago. They remember Katrina when they had to reformulate with what they had. I´d bet they had a contingency plan in place all along. I don´t think they got to be #1 by being stupid.

This is the new group III project that they are expanding on in baytown for 2028. My guess is they have had some capacity as this is listed as an 8000bpd expansion. I think they broke ground on the expansion in 2023.
