Well I finally got around to changing the oil in my GSX-R600. I had toyed with the idea of a Mobil 1 4T/Vtwin blend, but decided to give Mobil 1 15w50 (silver cap) a try.

Man! I love how the bike shifts now. Much improved over the previous fill of Rotella and just as good as the Amsoil MCF 10w40 I ran before that. I think I found my oil of choice for this bike. Fortunately it's only $22 and some change for five quarts at china-mart.

Cool. You plan on do an analysis?

My gixxer really liked Amsoil. I also had great luck with Honda oil. I think it's GN4? I never tried Rotella. The Amsoil and Honda came too highly recommended by the bike shop. I miss the bike. Need to get another one.... : (

have never ran the M1 15w50, always wanted to just never have. I may have to cave in and give it a try sometime

It's the regular old auto stuff.
No opinion if the 'gold cap' would be any better than the silver cap. The Gold Cap version has more Group III in it; perhaps for corrosion and longer drain. That might be the ticket, we'll have to wait and see.

M1 15W-50 is popular with Beemer & Harley riders on air-cooled bikes. It's offers a stout additive pack and is a great alternative to the nearly $9 a qt. M1 V-Twin 20W-50...

I used it quite a bit in my old RC51 back when it was the red cap...It worked very well.

The silver cap is the same as the old red cap.

from what others say the M1 15w50 is a pretty good one for bikes.

But like buster said about the 0W40 in the cbr1000:

"There are reasons why Mobil 1 10w-40/20w-50 MC oils have higher flash points, much higher shear stability and additive levels than today's PCMO's. M1 0w-40 contains more VII's and will shear fast in a bike."

does the same hold true for the 15W50??

Additive packs between M1 15W-50 & V-Twin are comparable (I have previously posted a VOA on both) with 15W-50 having the added benefit of moly where the V-Twin does not.

Flash points, including Amsoil MCV & Valvoline m/c dino for comparison:
M1 15W-50: 235
M1 V-Twin: 270
Amsoil MCV: 240
Valvoline 4-stroke m/c oil (dino): 230

Shear stability?

I've used the M1 15W-50 in my 3 Harleys and it always performed well.

Not sure why they change the cap colors, but I have been using the gold cap in my 2006 Roadglide and it really likes it. I go the full 5k between changes and have sent two samples to the lab in Ft. Wayne, with good feedback and results. Now I can't find the gold cap, so I bought the silver cap this time at Pepboys, I still refuse to shop at china-mart.........I use the rotella T in the KLR650 and it works.

They discontinued the 'red cap' in the Mobil-1 line because they went to the 'red cap' with the Mobil 5000 line. It would cause confusion otherwise.
It was popular and the public let them know it; they did bring it back only with the silver cap.

they had some of the silver cap 15w50 EP on clearance at walmart for $4, got the last 4 they had, will see how it does eventually

I just changed from M1 R4T 10w40 to M1 15w50 in my WeeStrom....and love it. It is the best oil I have had in my bike. Very, very smooth at high RPM's.

Has anyone had the oil analyzed yet?

I use the M1 15w50, in my Suzuki S40 and my Sears Riding Mower air cooleds. Never a hard start and never an issue, shifting on the Suzy was better for 5th gear than the factory oil. I had to be well over 60mph to shift or it shifted hard into gear. Now it's OK around 50mph.

Are you on SuzukiSavage.com ?

I've got a couple of early, low mileage/break-in UOA's from my S40 posted on here. Are you planning to do any UOA's ?

Yeah..but I don't post much there..the difference in the newer ones is another gear was added. The older ones are 4spd.

Mine is 2007 5 spd.
Naw..don't need any UOA's...mine only has 2400 miles so far. Only one oil change as yet.
