Hi, me again. This is an oil I recently tried in my Pontiac 400. According to Mobil, the 15w50(silver cap) has a higher amount of zinc additives for high spring pressures and flat tappet cams. As far as seat of the pants performance, this is the best oil I have ever used. The car is very responsive compared to the other coventional 15w40's and 20w50's I've tried.
One thing I noticed with it was I had more valvetrain noise.

I read on the Crane cams sight(my cam is a comp cam xe274) that they do not recommend synthetic oil even after break in. They claim that synthetic is so slippery that it will not allow the lifters to turn properly. They also claim that the synthetic will fall off the cam. Any truth to this? Will I screw up my cam If I use this oil? Mobil, of course, said I won't. Is it normal to have more valvetrain noise with mobil 1?

No truth at all. Crane has idiots working for them! You could not give me a Crane product. They did not stand behind their warranty and I know too many people who have had too many failure with their products! harley Davidson used to say almost the exact same thing about synthetic oils andnow they have their own brand of synthetic oil.Just make sure you have an HTHS no lower then 3.5 and plenty of ZDDP,Boron,Cacium and Moly and your cam and engine will be happy for a long time!

Hey John, good to hear from you. I was hoping you where going to respond to my thread. This is a page from Mobil 1. I did contact them and they advised that Mobil 1 has 1200 ppm of zinc and would be great for my old school valvetrain. I did not ask about the other additives. Its HTHS is 4.5. Like I said, I love the way my car performs on this oil. I can feel the difference. Start easier and revs a heck of lot faster. Just awesome glued to the seat performance.

Some other Pontiac freaks like me noted that there cam went flat after switching to Mobil 1 but this was some years ago. However they didn't mention what viscosity. According to Mobil 1, the 15w50 is the only weight that has the extra zinc. Well this be a good choice for my 400? Should I be concerned with the slightly louder valvetrain noise than before?

It`s the best oil I`ve ever used! This stuff makes my Z purr like a kitten. Smooth as glass on cold morning starts (even when my car sits for days unstarted) and fully warmed WOT runs.

I also use an Mobil 1 filter with it.

Thanks Agua man and fellow Texan. Like I said the only thing that I've noticed with this synthetic is that my valvetrain is a little noiser. This only occurs after doing several hard runs in South Texas heat. During start up and normal operation it is fairly quiet.
