i decided to use castrol...because as yoy mentioned the pao % is more than mobil,so i consider this shows that it has better quality...
another thing i want to ask...
the characteristic for the mobil and castrol seem to be almost the same...
the VI is 185 for the mobil and 169 for castrol...
what does this mean, what are the advantages and disadvantages between the 2?

They are both blends of both bases and from what I have gleaned from this discussion, the Castrol has more PAO in it. However the Mobil meets more spec's, so it's a toss up. Choose whichever you can get for the best price, as both are excellent products.

Why don't you try Lubro Moly 10W60 for M5?

This means that as temperatures drop, the Mobil thickens less. It has a higher Viscosity Index.

Because I use 0w40 in it. It is an '01 and spec's an LL-01 oil.

Ah ok. Well I would go then with Motul 5W40 in that case for summer driving and for winter with Castrol 0W30 GC or Mobil 1 0W40.

I currently run Mobil 1 0w40 in it exclusively. However, the oil this thread is about intrigued me, so I contacted Castrol about its availability here. They've been less than helpful thus far....

If it is Castrol then ONLY 0W30 GC. Other Castrol oils a re not worth of attention in North America.

This oil is a little heavier and appears to be as good as, if not better than GC. See the list of certs and approvals I posted earlier. It also is primarily PAO based. It is a product that interests me

You mean 0W40? Well that is EU specification.I would not mind using that at all. I am from europe originally, and I have always used Castrol. But I was deeply disappointed with Castrol when I moved to the U.S.

Yes, the 0w40. A product that Castrol told me earlier today didn't exist, LMAO

Recommended oil viscosity for M5 is 10W-60. And that is what BMW will advise you probably.

As for Castrol EDGE 0W-40 - it is possible for Germany to contain more PAO than versions for other countries. Earlier Castrol EDGE 0W-40 was 2 kinds:
1. Castrol EDGE Formula RS - that was the German version
2. Castrol EDGE Sport - the other version (I think)

That was a very strange thing to me - why do Castrol need 2 Castrol EDGE oils 0W-40.....
So I think the % of the PAO are different. (That's my opinion.. I do not have a lab to make analysis)

Now I see Mobil 1 has 2 versions of 0W-40 and two versions of 5W-50.....

Recommended viscosity for BMW Canada and BMW Germany for cars produced after 03/00 is any oil meeting BMW LL-01 FWIW

Australia used to get Castrol EDGE Sport and Castrol EDGE too. They dropped the Castrol EDGE Sport range which was cheaper. Castrol does not give away base oil details in their MSDS.

I would buy Mobil 1 0w40 over Castrol EDGE 0W40 it looks a lot better on paper.

In fact Castrol EDGE 5w30 A3 which is a lot cheaper than Castrol EDGE 0w40 looks compareable. It has the same HTHS at 3.6, Same VI, lower KV40. The only major difference is the pour point.

Castrol EDGE 5w30 is A3/SL rated here

Probably not. If it isn't imported into North America at all (very likely), you will never be able to get it.

@ dparm, Castrol's American website have PDS & SDS listed and updated as recently as summer of 2010 for this product. Makes me wonder if it can be ordered via a distributor or perhaps a dealership which services exotic cars such as Bugatti, Bentley and Rolls Royce...

If its not available in US market, then why would they bother listing it you know?

Because they make mistakes. The Castrol USA website is not very good compared to the ROW ones. There are tons of oil companies that list products you can't even get in the US.

The Canadian website has it too. But they told me the oil didn't exist when I asked about obtaining it.
