Mobil 1 0w40 Question(s)

New to me 08 328XI. Did first oil change with Mobil 1 0w40 (meets BMW spec and is mentioned as approved oil on website) and a MANN filter.

From what I've read M1 can give the tick of the valve train in the straight 6 engines (yes, I know, many other engines as well). I'm not getting the tick at cold start up (32F) or operating temp. So I would like to stick with Mobil 1 0w40. The BMW manual does not provide much at all for info on oils.

What is the safe ambient operating temps for Mobil 1 0w40?

Any temp you are likely to ever encounter.

I use that oil (though am currently using Pennzoil Ultra 5w-40) in my car and my wife's, as well as my sister's 330i.

Its superb oil, and I don't know what this nonsense about "M1 may cause tick of the valvetrain" is and why people won't quit saying it with no basis whatsoever. If anything, I think maybe it made the 'Hemi Tick' on my 392 a little less noticeable than it was on Pennzoil Ultra 0w40 (which is a singularly unimpressive product, IMO.)

I've run that in all Euro cars we have owned which have seen temp's ranging from -7F to +105F. Never any issues.

Whatever the safe ambient operating temperature is for the whole car.

I mean come on, you're using the flagship product from one of the best manufacturers of synthetic oil on the planet. Ambient temperatures would be one of my last concerns.

I asked because I wasn't sure. Now I know.

I use M1 for 68k in Armada and no tick. No tick on the BMW either so I will do a used oil analysis and go from there. I like to find an oil that works well and stick with it.

I have ran it through a SD winter more than a few times and started it as low as -25 or so with no problems.

Ditto with respect to my modern BMWs- including my ti, which sees the track every so often.
The '02 gets Mobil 1 15W-50...

I shall do just that! A few used oil analysis and I'll know how far I can extend it out to.

The list of all the high end cars that use it as factory fill would be a good clue.

Good choice of oil BISCUT. I always love the online oil change videos of Euro cars when the poster goes, "I chose 5w30 for my climate." It's not much about the viscosity as getting the right spec oil as you took the time to do! Very smart! I use this product in three cars myself.

I run Mobil 1 0W40 in my M3, and I've routinely taken the oil up to 220~240F range when I rev the motor pass 8500rpm, engine didn't go kaboom.

I'm running it in my 02 325Ci. I might actually spring for an UOA since I'm at 6,000, 100% urban miles with lots of hot weather and extended idling.

It would seem to have more certs than any oil I have seen.

I have an email from Mobil back in 06 stating that the 300 degree operating temps I experienced in my car were no problem at all and would not harm the oil!

Mobil 1 ESP 5w30 meets a fair amount of specs also.
