The early (pre PI) ones had valve seal issues when they got old.

The pre '96 4.6 had a poor valve stem seal that begin failure around 75K mi and were almost non existent by 100K mi... The 5.4 made it's first appearance for the '97 model year so assuming Ford learned a lesson on the 4.6, should not have a stem seal issue...

Yup, wasn't sure if it was completely ironed out prior to the PI heads being used or not

I know it doesn't affected the PI-headed engines (4.6L and 5.4L).

Yeah, Ford has put most of it's problems to bed by the later generations. They quit spitting plugs and became a sane motor!

BTW, I bought a TON of 0w-40 at the last Napa sale and am using it in almost everything we own now! Terrific oil.

wow.... I was gone awhile and come back to see 3 pages of debate on this!

So far I haven't noticed anything good or bad with the 0w40 in the sump, engine still rattles just a fraction of a second at cold startup and then is quiet as a mouse. No leaks, no burning and no noticeable change in mpg wife has been towing much more than normal lately too...

Now after hearing all the great comments on this stuff I do feel a little more warm and fuzzy inside
