Mobil 1 0w40 in "beater" cavalier

Hello again folks. So, I got a nice 1998 Cavalier 2dr with 200,557 miles on it. Real solid and came out of KY. I am using Mobil 1 0w40 in it currently and it's doing well. Wondering if I should use some Mobil 1 Advanced Fuel Economy 0w30 for winter or stick with the Mobil 1 0w40

What is the 0W part about?

Cheapest oil you can get in that thing, is all that matters. Don't want your current oil fill to be worth 50% of the car.

If the engine sound smooth, Id try 0w30 in winter.

I'd pick up the owner's manual from the glove box.

Go to specified fluids and lubricants and run that.

I'd be using SuperTech.

I only use premium synthetics in my beater Camry because I get them on clearance or free. Otherwise it would probably get SuperTech.

I would run a name brand oil from closeouts or SuperTech in a beater.

I got my AFE on clearance.

If both were priced the same I'd rock the 0w40.

Between now and then you'll figure out any consumption issues etc. Why commit?

Rotella T6 5W-40. Or Napa full synthetic 5W-50 (on sale at $2.99 qt). 200,000 that engine will be loose enough that it will easily fill the gaps

WHY would winter make any difference?

As I understand it, the second number is more or less the viscosity at operating temperature (IIRC nominally 100C?). That'll be pretty much the same winter or summer, because its thermostatically controlled.

You said beater. When I call a car a beater it is taken off synthetic oil and run on the cheapest brand name oil I can find for it. Odds are it will be nothing with the Mobil 1 name on it.

Im pretty sure that is a good oil for that but i would have gone with a high mileage 5w30 maybe mobil 1 high mileage if you like that oil.. Im sure with the proper care you give your vehicles that vehicle will last another 100,000 miles..They are pretty good cars but i think there are safety issues although that could be earlier models. Good luck with your new addition.

Excellent oil for that engine - can reduce the piston slap they are prone to.

Max life or defy or Castrol High Mileage or even a store brand hm for that car

Id keep 0w40 in it. You pasted 200k,during the summer I would add a qt of Mobil 1 10w40hm to keep seals pliable but other than that,just drive it. Remember that synthetic oil flows better so even though its a 0w40 wt,it might flow better than a 5 or 10w30 in winter. I ran 10w30 redline oil in a 98 sunfire se with mods and got 35mpg plus all year round on 89 octane.

You can get the Mobil 1 on sale w/rebate at Walmart for $2.17/qt through October. It's hard to get much cheaper than that for any synthetic...or even with most conventional oils. Unless your car is only worth $20, I'd use the Mobil 1 with no concerns. At the price I'd run M1 in beaters, daily drivers, and weekend only toys.

I have 0w30AFE in mine with more miles. I have never done a used oil analysis but from what I gather these engines prefer a thicker oil. I would run that 0w40 year round and change it every 9-10,000 miles.

With the rebates going, Mobil 1 0w40 is SuperTech cheap.

It's a bad idea to start mixing oils, if the car in question has a high oil consumption or any leaks that are beyond economic repair, then it would be worth considering a high mileage oil.

Apart from that the owner needs to look in his handbook to see what it says about the use of 30 grades in summer. In economic terms there is probably not much point doing extra oil changed to allow the use of an 0w30 in winter and an 0w40 in summer.
