Switched from Rotella T6 5W-40 to Mobil 1 0w30 and my gas mileage went from 35mpg to 37mpg on the highway. That's a 1996 Saturn SC2 with manual trans.

Oil consumption seems about the same...about 1qt every 1000-1200 miles.

Best,

I've also noticed using Mobil 1 0w30 for the first time there is an increase in my Wife's 2007 Toyota Yaris tracked via fuelly.com going from about 33mpg to 35mpg in the city. She's got about 5K on the oil and its still holding at 35mpg city and no oil consumption. Previous oil used was the stealership's dino castrol which after 5K (per the service manual), the engine was noticeably louder.

Well not exactly, you were doing highway miles on a manual transmission. My wife's car is an automatic and rarely gets on the highway. On the highway we've gotten close to 40mpg, it just happens once in a blue moon. While the SC2 may be a larger car I'd say interior space is about the same (my mom had an SC2).
But yeah, you'd think the MPG would have gotten better after all those years. My 81 diesel rabbit got about 50mpg :p

I saw about a 2mpg increase IIRC in my Ford Escort GT on the Mobil 1 Advanced Fuel Economy 0w30 switching from Formula Shell 10w30 bulk.

YMMV.

Well, you probably use less oil. :)

My folks have a 96 Jetta 2.slow 5sp that gets nearly 40mpg on the highway. It really is amazing how little progress has been made.

You have to remember how much heavier cars have gotten in the last 20 years. Look at todays Camrys, Accords, Mustangs, ect and compare the curb weights to the same models from the late 80's to early 90s.

EPA mileage estimate testing procedures have also been changed in the last few years to reflect conditions which are more real world (lower estimated fuel econonmy)

You should get about 1-2% increase in gas mileage when you go down 1 weight. My E430 MPG went from about 21.xx to 22.xx for mixed driving when I switched from Mobil 1 0W40 to xW20. The MPG was tracked with on-board trip computer for several thousands miles.

I think a lot of any increase you got is from the thinner viscosity.
Anybody's should have shown an improvement.
That [2 MPG]is a stupendous increase from going to a 30 from a 40, IMO.

For a car that uses a qt every 1k, you should consider using a dino in the same viscosity. Really.

no surprise when you went from a thicker weight with higher hths

m1 advertising 0w30 to save gas is a fluke...

HTHS of 3.06 has a lot to do with it too. Higher the HTHS, the more your mileage suffers.

Actually, the disparity in weight probably wasn't that much. I neglected to mention that about 20% of the fill with the Rotella 5W-40 was MMO.

Yep.......

That's the plan, now that I've gotten the innards de-loused.

LOL

I suspect the Saturn would go through 0W-20 like Lindsay Lohan goes through Colombian marching powder. :)
