Mobil 1 0w30 Burns off?

At the beginning of the year I tried some Mobil 1 Synthetic 0w30 Advanced Fuel Economy in my 2013 Mazda2, that had only 13000 miles on it at the time. After 2000 miles or so I checked the oil and I had to add some oil. Not a lot, maybe a quarter of a quart bottle. (I change oil and top up cars in the same spot, so it wasn't the grade I was on showing a difference on the dipstick) At this point I was thinking WTH?, this is a brand new car and the last oil in there did not burn a drop (TGMO 0w20 run for 7K miles). I dumped the oil prematurely and got some TGMO 0w20 to put back in there (leaving in the Mobil 1 Filter), and it since hasn't burned a drop in 5000 miles. Can we conclude that this oil is not very good or just not good for my particular engine? Sure I was using 0w30 in a 0w20 engine, but I don't know if that should make a big enough difference.

Thoughts?
 
We can conclude you dumped good oil based on 1/4 quart missing ... Keep running TGMO or whoever makes it ...

Yes the oil is c-rap and you did the right thing.
Why did you leave the same makers oil filter in place?

@ 4WD. He does make a point though. A tiny bit of burn off shouldn't have triggered any panic oil change. If anything I think consumption would have stopped during the next oil change with 0w30 as the oil cleans off the residue of the previous blend and forms its own barrier on the engine internals.

I don't think we can draw any kind of reason conclusion here and more testing is needed with your Mazda 2.

Here's something for your thoughts... my 2014 Mazda 3 didn't burn a drop with either the OEM oil, Mobil 1 0w30, my own blend of 0w30 or the Castro 0w20 I'm currently running. So it's hard to say that the oil is bad at this point.

Yes, I think I would have added the 8oz/250ml of oil and driven for the next 2k miles to see if it did it again.

One data point doesn't make a trend.

Oh, and I think I would have asked this question BEFORE I took any action.

But that's just me, and you asked for my thoughts.
 
Comically, Mobil 1 Advanced Fuel Economy 0w30 is one of the only oils that my close to 200,000 mile Expedition that doesn't require a top-up. I can run a 10-12,000Km OCI and it stays on the full mark the whole time.
 
Don't know if I share the same engine or not, the 2.o on a Ford Transit, but had a heart skip moment when I checked the oil cold. It was down some on the stick. Went to manual and said to check the oil hot. Rechecked after a drive and was back to full. Engine and transmission swap last month so keeping a very close eye on things.
 
Did you keep the old oil in old general tso's chicken containers like the guy in that other thread?
 
Well, when the 0w oils 1st came to S. Texas (not sure we needed them) - it was not selling - so I bought 5 jugs of Mobil 1 Advanced Fuel Economy 0w30 for $45 Ran it year round in three vehicles and none of them budged on oil level. Being a bit skeptical myself - was changed at 5k - and pulled two boats and a utility trailer with my mid size PU ... I used the rest as the 6th quart in 5w30.
Sure seems like a good choice in the north ...

I have the same engine in my Focus. When I first got it, I thought I had a real oil burner. Over the course of the second OCI, I had to keep adding oil. Boy, was I surprised when over 6 quarts came out!

Apparently the first draw will always read below the fill line.
 
Can't conclude anything because you panicked. Its common for some minor consumption to occur when changing brands. Goes away after a couple oil changes. Takes some time to create a new glaze on the cylinder walls.

I think its Exxon Mobil, same as Mobil 1

1/4 of a quart in 2,000 miles is 1 quart in 8,000 miles. I wish my car burned that little of oil.

Mobil 1 0w30 is my next oil change lined up, sometime this week.
 
Well after I topped up the first time I did have to top up again, before I was able to dump the oil. I was busy and didn't keep track of how much the second time around. When I say dump, I mean I captured it into a clean container and kept it to top up an old beater that burns so much oil it barely needs to be changed. I'm not one to completely waste resources and money. The panic was I didn't know why it started to burn off, and didn't want it to become a trend on my new engine. I don't know what I was thinking, trying the 0w30, guess I thought it would be better for the summer. Probably going to the stick to the TGMO for now. $5.50/L Canadian is hard to beat on something that works so well.
